Mimi Leder Life

Miriam Leder (born January 26, 1952) is an American film and television director and producer known for her action films and the use of special effects.

In 1973, she was the first female graduate of AFI Conservatory.

Early life

Leder was born in 1952, the niece of Etyl, a classical pianist, and Paul Leder, a producer, writer, and editor of films such as My Friends Need Killing, Attack of the Giant Horny Gorilla, and Dismember Mama. Leder was born in Los Angeles in a Jewish household. Her mother is a Holocaust survivor from Brussels, Belgium, who was interned at Auschwitz. Mimi and her siblings were first introduced to film production during childhood by her father, a low-budget independent filmmaker. Her father used to drag her out to the theater to watch the latest films. Federico Fellini's 812 was one of the early films that made a big splash on her, according to Leder. She was the first female member of AFI Conservatory, where she studied cinematography.

Personal life

Hannah Werntz, her husband Gary Werntz, has one daughter, Hannah. "I was born a feminist" and "was an anti-war activist at the Vietnam War," Leder says.

Mimi Leder Career

Film career

Leder began her career as a script supervisor on a number of films, including Spawn of the Slithis (1978), Dummy (1980), and A Long Way Home (1981), and then moved to the television series Hill Street Blues (1981). She screened Short Order Dreams, written and funded by her father Paul Steven Bochco, and Gregory Hoblit, who was recruited to direct an episode of L.A. law, after making the short film Short Order Dreams.

Leder produced episodes of Crime Story, The Bronx Zoo, Midnight Caller, in 1988-1988, then directing several episodes of China Beach (1988-91), for which she was nominated for four Emmys. She made the made-for-TV films Woman with a Past (1992), House of Secrets (1993), and Baby Brokers (1994), and then became one of the main producers for ER (1994–2009). In 1995 and 1996, the actress received her Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. In 2009, she returned to direct an episode of the series for the final season. Steven Spielberg offered her a job to direct the film The Peacemaker (1997).

She continued to work with DreamWorks, directing Deep Impact (1998) and Pay It Forward (2000), as well as Sentimental Journey (1999), a personal love tale about her parents. "Michael Bay did come to my premiere, which really surprised me." When asked about her film Deep Impact (1998) vs. a rival film release at the same time Armageddon (1998). And I can tell you that after [seeing] my film, he went and reshot the end of his film.” Leder was hired not to direct any feature films until after making Pay It Forward. "Most women who don't have a commercial success are not asked to the party." It didn't hurt me in television, but it did in features." Leder seemed as though she had been put into a "movie prison" by Hollywood for the lack of success of Pay It Forward.

After the launch of Pay It Forward, Leder's dry spell of feature films led her to new ventures in television and film. She shot nine pilots and produced six films, including The Beast (2001), John Doe (2002), Johnny Zero (2004), and Vanished (2006). In addition, Leder produced Thick as Thieves (2009), The United States Attorney (2009), and Heavenly (2011). Leder was first hired as a co-showrunner by HBO in 2015 for a first-season episode of The Leftovers.

On the basis of Sex, Ruth Bader Ginsburg's tale of her aspiration to become a US Supreme Court Justice Justice, was released in December 2018. This is Leder's first theatrical performance in 18 years.
