Tony Kaye Career

Life and career

Kaye was born in Stamford Hill, London, United Kingdom, to a Haredi Jewish family.

He starred in television commercials with award-winning spots for British Rail InterCity ("Relax" 1988) and the Solid Fuel Advisory Council ("Furry Friends"), as well as his 1993 advertisement for Dunlop Tyres ("Unexpected") in furs by the Velvet Underground. He had received 23 British Design and Art Direction (D&AD) awards by 1996, and he was jointly named "most honoured director" (co-equal with Frank Budgen) at the company's 50th anniversary in 2012.

Kaye has produced many well-known music videos, including the video for "God's Gonna Cut You Down" by Johnny Cash, "What God Wants" by Roger Waters, and "Help Me" and "Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum. Kaye is a nine-time Grammy nominated music video producer.

Edward Norton and Edward Furlong appeared in American History X (1998), a film about bigotry. Kaye disapproved the film's final cut and unsuccessfully attempted to have his name removed from the credits. Norton was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the film, and it was widely lauded. The contest over artistic control of the film, which has firmly embedded in Hollywood folklore, has nearly ended Kaye's career. He delivered his original cut on time and within budget, but when the producer, New Line Cinema, refused to change, the protests began. The discussion erupted quickly. Kaye invested $100,000 of his own money to buy 35 full-page ads in the Hollywood trade press condemning Norton and the producer, as well as quotes from a number of people, from John Lennon to Abraham Lincoln. He attended a meeting in New Line to which (to facilitate discussions) he carried a Catholic priest, a Jewish rabbi, and a Tibetan monk. When the company told him an additional eight weeks to re-cut the film, he said he had discovered a new vision and needed a year to remake it. He travelled to the Caribbean to have the script rewritten by Nobel Prize-winning writer Derek Walcott. When the Directors Guild refused to let him change his name from the New Line version of the film, he filed a $200 million lawsuit later.

The abortion debate in the United States was explored in Kaye's second film, a documentary called Lake of Fire. It was first established in Toronto in September 2006. The film was nominated for Best Documentary Film at the Independent Spirit Awards, the Chicago Film Critics Association Awards, and the Satellite Awards for Best Documentary Film, but it didn't win a nomination). Kaye is the largest lake of Fire in the United Kingdom. It took him 18 years to make.

Laurence Fishburne, Karl Urban, Evan Ross, Brittany Snow, and Stephen Dorff appeared in Black Water Transit, Kaye's third feature film. During the summer of 2007, the film was shot in New Orleans. According to reports, a rough cut was shown at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, but it was never released to theaters. The film is unfinished as a result of the company's bankruptcy and the ensuing litigation as of 2017.

Detachment (2011), Kaye's fourth feature film, as well as starring Kaye's daughter Betty, is a tale about teachers. Brody's story centers on a struggling substitute teacher in a failing New York public school. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2011. At the following film festivals, the film premiered and received honors: Deauville American Film Festival, Woodstock Film Festival, Honorary Maverick Award for Kaye, and the International Film Festival in Tournai, Belgium.

Kaye revealed in early 2016 that he was supposed to direct Joe Vinci's screenplay titled Stranger Than the Wheel, starring Shia LaBeouf, and that he had signed on to direct Honorable Men, a crime drama written by Gary DeVoe. However, neither scheme has come to fruition. Since 2020, he has revealed several new initiatives in development: Djimon Hounsou, Civil, a drama set within the civil rights movement; and Tremendum, a partially animated film based on Kaye's discussions with Marlon Brando. He's also set to direct The Trainer, a dark comedy film written by Vito Schnabel and Jeff Solomon.
