Career
White, a writer and producer on Dawson's Creek and Freaks and Geeks, wrote and appeared in Chuck & Buck, The Good Girl, Orange County, School of Rock, and Nacho Libre. He appeared in the 2004 reboot of The Stepford Wives and the 2008 film Smother. Entertainment Weekly named Chuck & Buck, a boychild who stalks his childhood friend, the best film of 2000. Jeff Bridges called White's Chuck & Buck "the decade's best show," in an interview with The New York Times.
He often works with actor-writer Jack Black on film. Black and White, a production firm that closed in 2006, were co-founded together, which became Black and White. White isn't a fan of classic rock, but he did write School of Rock specifically so Black could perform his own favorite rock songs.
At the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, White made his directorial debut with the self-penned Year of the Dog. At the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, he was a member of the US Dramatic Jury.
Laura Dern introduced White to a program with HBO called Enlightened, which premiered on October 10, 2011. Amy Jellicoe, Dern's character, attends a Hawaiian retreat after her professional life is in jeopardy, and she is introduced to meditation. White himself had an on-the-job meltdown while directing a younger television series and incorporated elements of that experience, as well as his own study of Buddhist meditation, into the current series' plot. In the first and second seasons, White wrote the pilot and all of the episodes.
For his computer-animated film The Emoji Movie, White co-wrote the screenplay, for which he received a Golden Raspberry Award. Brad's Status, a 2017 film, was written and directed by him.
White wrote, produced, and directed The White Lotus, a satirical limited series for HBO, in 2021.
In February 2022, White was announced that it would produce two new animated films for Universal Pictures and Illumination: the original comedy Migration, set to be published on June 30, 2023, and the fourth installment in the Despicable Me series.
He and his dad Mel appeared on The Amazing Race's fourteenth season together. They lasted for seven legs before being eliminated in sixth place in Phuket, Thailand. Mel and Mike have returned to compete in The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business, where they were the second team eliminated in Japan.
As a member of the Goliath tribe, White was a contestant on Survivor, David vs. Goliath, then to the reshuffled Jabeni tribe and the merged Kalokalo tribe. He made it to Day 39 and gained three jury votes, finishing second, behind second place behind winner Nick Wilson.
White said he had been a big fan of the show and that he had developed a rapport with show's host Jeff Probst, who also gave the host suggestions for improving the show. For instance, Probst said that it was White who discouraged him from returning Redemption Island for Survivors: San Juan del Survivor. At some point, White decided to enroll in the show but was refused to be selected due to a suspicion of having "sloppy seconds" from other reality television shows. After being chosen, White said he had no other conversations with Probst until the game was over.
