Acting career
Farrell appeared in a few series in the 1960s. In the episode "Never Look Back" on The Monkee in 1967, a young US Forest Service ranger appeared (uncredited); astronaut Arland in the episode "Genie, Genie, Who's Got the Genie?" In the episode "The Bankroll" of Combat, Jeannie Dreams; an Army psychiatrist. In The Bill Cosby Exhibition, an ex-high school friend turned well-known actor of Chet Kincaid.
In 1968, he appeared in the NBC soap opera Days of Our Lives. In 1970, he appeared in the CBS prime-time series The Interns as one of the young doctors, a cast led by Broderick Crawford. In ABC's The Man and the City, he appeared as Anthony Quinn's assistant in 1971. Farrell appeared in The Questor Tapes in 1973 while under Universal Studios' custody. During his time under contract, he appeared on a variety of television shows, including Banacek, Mannix, Marcus Welby, M.D., The Six Million Dollar Man, and The New Land; and starred in a television pilot with Jane Wyman that did not sell.
Farrell guest appeared in the television western drama Bonanza and appeared in several commercials as a spokesperson for Maytag dryers and Plymouth automobiles among other items in the early 1970s.
When Wayne Rogers left M*A*S*H at the end of the third season, Farrell's big break came in 1975. Farrell was recruited for the newly created position of B.J. Hunnicutt and series lead Harry Morgan, who replaced McLean Stevenson, also died at the end of the third season. Morgan appeared in the season-three episode "The General Flipped at Dawn" (for which he received an Emmy Award for Best Guest Role in a Primetime Comedy Series). Farrell appeared on television for the remaining eight years. He wrote five episodes and directed four others during this period.
