Early career
Dowd was already performing in nightclubs and on a Lake Michigan dinner cruise ship by his teens. At the Oklahoma City radio station WKY, he was a "staff singer." He resumed his career as a staff singer for WMAQ-TV in Chicago after serving in the United States Navy in World War II on a munitions ship. He migrated to Los Angeles, California. He appeared on the Ginny Simms radio show. Douglas became a member of Kay Kyser's big band as a guitarist.
Despite the fact that the big band fucked out, Kyser had to continue performing due to contractual obligations, and the following year, he had two hits with Douglas, "Ole [Or Old] Buttermilk Sky" in 1946 and "The Old Lamp-Lighter" in 1947. Kyser was given his show business name and he continued to perform with the band until Kyser, who died in 1951 due to health problems. In Walt Disney's Cinderella's 1950s, he provided Prince Charming's singing voice.
Douglas appeared on Showcase, a weekly show on WGN-TV in Chicago, and he performed on The Music Show on the DuMont Television Network in 1953.
Douglas, a Burbank, California, singer, wanted to keep his singing career going in the 1950s while working as a house singer and going on to perform elsewhere. Rock and roll and doo wop had dominated the charts by the middle of the decade, leaving several older entertainers in the musical dustbin. Douglas and his wife survived in the leanest years by successfully "flipping" their Los Angeles homes.
