Life and career
Binder, who descended from Russian-Jewish immigrants, grew up in Birmingham's suburbs. He attended Camp Tamakwa, a summer camp in Algonquin Provincial Park, Canada, from 1966 to 1975; this experience inspired his 1993 film Indian Summer (and the filming location).
With the premiere of his first screenplay, Coupe de Ville, directed by Joe Roth and co-produced by Binder, and his own HBO stand-up comedy special that aired the following night, he began his career as a screenwriter and stand-up comedian in March 1990.
Binder's second screenplay, 1992's Crossing the Bridge, was his second screenplay.
Binder's "Mighty Barnes," a 20-episode 2001-02 HBO comedy film in which he co-wrote, co-directed, and starred as the central character "Micky Barnes," gained more fame with his 20-episode 2001-02 HBO comedy film The Mind of the Married Man. The Sex Monster, produced by his own in Aspen, received "Best Film" that year, and Binder received "Best Actor" at the 2001 Comedy Arts Festival.
Binder wrote and directed three mid-2000s films in which he also appeared in supporting roles. The Upside of Anger, starring Joan Allen and Kevin Costner, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2005; thirteen months later, Man About Town starring Ben Affleck was first shown at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival; Binder wrote and appeared in the film, starring Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle. Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer appear in his most recent film, Black or White, released in 2014.
Binder, an actor, has appeared in Steven Spielberg's Minority Report with Tom Cruise, Rod Lurie's The Contender, Joan Allen, and Rebecca Miller's The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.
Binder has written the bulk of the screenplays he has written, and he has performed in some of them as well. He has written screenplays for Steven Spielberg, Julia Roberts, Robert Zemeckis, Jim Cary, Adam Sandler, Tim Allen, and Reese Witherspoon.
Keep Calm, Binder's first book set in the United Kingdom, was published in 2016. Bill Burr's most recent Netflix comedy special Paper Tiger was directed by him. On October 4, 2020, the five-part documentary series The Comedy Store, based on the years he spent there and interviews with the majority of the key alumni of the famous nightclub, aired on Showtime.
