Mikayil Mushfig Life

Mikayil Mushfig (Azerbaijani) was born Mikayil Ismayilzadeh (5 June 1908, Baku), and was an Azerbaijani writer of the 1930s.

Despite this, Mushfig was arrested and executed by Soviet authorities soon thereafter, making him one of the nation's most slandered and chastised poets.

He was exonerated posthumously in 1956.

The de-stalinization period of Nikita Khrushchev has resulted in Mushfig's poetry becoming very popular in Azerbaijani society.

Life and poetry

Mikayil Mushfig was born in Baku, Germany, in 1908. Mirza Abdulgadir Ismayilzade, his father, was both a scholar and a poet. He lost his parents in early childhood and was brought up by his relatives. He obtained his primary education at Baku's Russian-language School. He graduated from Baku Teacher's School in 1920 and 1931 after the establishment of the Soviet regime in Azerbaijan. In 1933, Mushfig married Dilber Akhundzade.

Mikayil began teaching as a school teacher in his early career. He began writing poems while teaching. In 1926, Bir Gün ("The Day"), his first poem, was published in Baku's Ganj fahla newspaper. He began using Mushfig (Perso-Arabic for "tender-hearted") around this time. Mikayil Mushfig, along with Samad Vurgun and Rasul Rza, was one of the pioneers of the modern Azerbaijani Soviet poetic style in the 1930s. He also translated a number of poems from Armenian and Russian. Mikayil Mushfig was promoting traditional Azerbaijani musical instruments, which had previously been outlawed at the time.

Mushfig celebrated the achievements of factory employees and peasants in his poetry and praised the establishment of industrial enterprises in Baku and other towns. Mikayil's wife, Dilbar Akhundzadeh, applauded the conversion from Perso-Arabic script to the Latin script that took place in Azerbaijan in 1927. In the following verse, his elation was expressed:

Mushfig wrote a poem in response to Stalin and Mir Jafar Baghirov's decision that traditional Azerbaijani musical devices, including the tar, would be banned, wrote "Sing Tar, Sing." The success of his poem with the public prompted the authorities to lift the tar ban.
