Playing career

Handzu, nicknamed "Zeus" in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, was drafted 101st overall by the St. Louis Blues, and spent two-and-a-half seasons with them from 1998–99 to 2000–01. Pavol Demitra, ubo Barte, and Handzu are among the "Slovak Pack" series of the Blues. Following the 1999–2000 season, Handzu finished second in polling for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, which is given annually to the NHL's top defensive forward.

Handzu, along with Ladislav Nagy, Jeff Taffe, and two first-round draft picks, was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for Keith Tkachachuk. Handzu's first season with Phoenix lasted two seasons.

Handzu was traded along with Robert Esche to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Brian Boucher and a third-round draft pick on June 12, 2002. He became the second player in NHL history to score a penalty shot goal in overtime on December 5, 2002. He came in second on the Flyers with 58 points in 2003-2004 and then signed a three-year contract extension with Philadelphia during the offseason. He played for the HKm Zvolen in the Slovak Extraliga, from 2004-05.

Handzu was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Kyle Calder on August 4, 2006. Handzuzu is still undergoing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which sidelines him for the remainder of the 2006–07 season, just eight games into his season with Chicago.

Handzue's four-year, $16 million deal with the Los Angeles Kings began on July 2, 2007.

Handzu’s two-year, $5 million deal with the San Jose Sharks began on July 1, 2011. Handzuo was traded back to Chicago in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick during the 2012–13 season.

Handzu and the Blackhawks defeated the Boston Bruins 3–2 in Game 6 of the 2013 Stanley Cup Finals on June 24th, advancing to the Stanley Cup. Handzur re-signed to a one-year contract in order to keep the team intact in the following off-season. He played in his 1,000th NHL game on March 19, 2014, on his 1,000th appearance in the NHL.

Handzu's game-winning goal over against the Los Angeles Kings, the eventual Stanley Cup champions, came in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals on May 28th. The Blackhawks had been barred from playoff contention when they were dropped from playoff contention on June 16th, and the team announced that they would not be re-signing Handzu's after the season. On July 1, he became an unrestricted free agent.

Management career

Handzu's career as a player began in 2000 but resigned in September 2022 after the organization decided to continue allowing national team members to play in the KHL, but "It is a fundamental value issue for me," Handzu said on Twitter.
