Michael Che Campbell (born May 19, 1983) is an American stand-up comedian, actor, and writer.

He is best known for his work on Saturday Night Live, where he serves as co-anchor on Weekend Update and co-head writer.

Che and Colin Jost were named co-hosts of the 70th Emmy Awards for 2018.He was briefly a correspondent for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and has previously worked as a writer for Saturday Night Live.

At the end of September 2014, he became a Weekend Update co-anchor for the 40th season of Saturday Night Live, alongside Colin Jost and replacing Cecily Strong.

Early life

Michael Che Campbell was born in Manhattan, New York City, New York, the youngest of seven children of Rose and Nathaniel Campbell. His father named Michael after the revolutionary Che Guevara.

Che was raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He graduated from the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.

Che worked in customer service for a Toyota car dealership for two years. He also created acrylic portraits of celebrities, printed the portraits on T-shirts, and sold them in SoHo. Tommy Hilfiger noticed his work and offered Che freelance work, but he did not turn in any designs.

Che began doing stand-up comedy in 2009 and was regularly performing multiple sets a night. Che appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman in 2012. When Rolling Stone named Che one of "The 50 Funniest People" in 2013, Variety named him one of "10 Comics to Watch" on "The 50 Funniest People."

Che first appeared on Saturday Night Live as a writer and then as a staff writer shortly after. Che will join The Daily Show in June as a reporter, according to April 28, 2014. Che made his Onscreen debut as a Daily Show correspondent on June 4. Despite being in just nine segments during his brief time on the program, TV Guide praised him for his efforts. "Race/Off: Live From Somewhere," his show's signature work, a satirical look at the 2014 Ferguson protests. Che "reported" from various places (with frequent background updates carried out by chroma key), looking for a place where a black man would not be harassed by police officers in this segment. Che was seen floating in outer space at the time of the sketch.

Che will take over Cecily Strong's role as a Weekend Update co-anchor for the 40th season of SNL on September 11, 2014, co-anchoring the segment with Colin Jost. Che is the first African-American co-anchor of Weekend Update. Che mainly hosted Weekend Update and rarely appeared in any sketches during his first two seasons. Che was promoted to the main cast during his third season. Che was named co-head writer of Saturday Night Live in December 2017. Megh Wright of Vulture.com complimented the Weekend Update joke-swapping segment, where Che writes outrageously racist jokes for Jost to deliver. Che resigned as the head writer ahead of the show's 48th season in 2022.

Che revealed that he was leaving the office after the current season, but he didn't specify when or why he was leaving at a stand-up exhibition on March 26, 2022. After initially denying on Instagram that he would leave, he later told Tony Dokoupil of CBS News Sunday Morning that he was still uncertain about his future on SNL.

Che appeared in the film Top Five in 2014, as one of Chris Rock's characters' friends.

Che co-hosted the Emmy Awards with Colin Jost on September 17, 2018. Che and Jost appeared on WWE's Monday Night Raw's March 4, 2019, where both were confirmed as special correspondents for WrestleMania 35. Both wrestler Braun Strowman's storyline culminated in Che and Jost's participation in the André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania.

Che has also appeared on many episodes of the "The Roundtable of Gentlemen" podcast.
