Michael Bland Career

Life and career

Bland was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1987, he graduated from Minneapolis South High School. He lives in Minneapolis but appears in Los Angeles as a session drummer for Mandy Moore, Clay Aiken, Backstreet Boys, and the Anchorman soundtrack.

He accompanied Prince from 1989 to 1996, Chaka Khan in 1996, and Maxwell 1998–2000. He auditioned for the new Guns N' Roses lineup in 1997. Although Josh Freese had already been hired, he was still employed with A Perfect Circle and was unable to fully commit. Bland was considered a potential full-time option.

He participated in the Lille project of French reed player Michel Portal in 2000 (the rest of the band was Tony Hymas, Sonny T., Vernon Reid, and Jef Lee Johnson). Michael Bland, Jef Lee Johnson and Sonny T., produced News from the Jungle, which released one album for Universal, which was also produced by Jean Rochard. Both bands, Michel Portal's and News from the Jungle, performed in France (Paris Olympia). Bland appeared on several tracks of the Michel Portal album Birdwatcher in 2006.

Bland appeared on Paul Westerberg's tour in 2005, and he most recently appeared on the Dixie Chicks' Hurricane Katrina Relief telethon. Bland is now a producer, and he is currently working with the up-and-coming rock-pop band Catchpenny, who hails from Minneapolis.

He is the drummer on Soul Asylum's album The Silver Lining. He also visits them on tour.

Bland, together with colleague and ex-NPG member Sonny T. (Thompson) teamed up with Prince to provide drumming on Prince's 3121 album's title track.

On Indigenous's 2006 album, Chasing the Sun, Bland played drums.

Bland & Thompson & Thompson arranged the rhythm tracks for several songs on Prince's 2007 CD Planet Earth.

Bland is usually found every Sunday and Monday night at "Bunker's" in downtown Minneapolis, performing with Dr. Mambo's Combo, if not on tour.

Michael Bland has been busily working on a Mayda release as a result of his own protégé's release into the Minneapolis area as well as recording a studio album. Stereotype EP, her first release, came out in 2007. Michael Bland continued to work with Mayda and launched The Interception, her first full-length album with her.

Bland and Thompson appeared on Prince's album Lotusflow3r, which was released in 2009.

Bland, along with ex-Prince bandmates, Sonny Thompson and Tommy Barbarella, joined Nick Jonas and The Administration in 2009. This culminated in numerous television appearances with the group, an album, and a tour in early 2010.

Bland has a natural pitch and is known to tune his snare drum to the song's tonic pitch, according to Cory Wong.

Soul Asylum is a British singer who has performed on many albums and tours. In 2020, the band toured in favor of its new album, "Hurry Up And Wait." COVID-19 cut the tour short. However, the new album is the best-selling Soul Asylum album since the mid 90's.
