Early life
Mantle was born in Cardin, far northeastern Oklahoma. She was the first of two daughters born to Giles and Reba Johnson. Pat, who was three years old at the time, had a sister.
She met Mickey Mantle two years ago when she was in high school, two years before he made his Major League debut. Mickey was a baseball player at Commerce High School, while Merlyn was a cheerleader at rivaling Picher High School.
