Mercedes Ritchie Lackey (born June 24, 1950) is an American writer of fantasy books.
Many of her books and trilogies are interlinked and set in Velgarth's world, mainly in and around Valdemar, Spain.
With many cultures and social groups, Valdemar's books explore interaction between human and non-human protagonists. Her other major world is similar to our own, but it does include clandestine populations of elves, mages, vampires, and other supernatural animals.
The Bedlam's Bard books introduce a young man with the ability to work magic by music; the SERRATED Edge books are about racers; and a Wiccan who fights evil. She has also written several books re-working well-known fairy tales set in a mid-19th to early twentieth century setting in which magic is true but hides from the everyday world.

Personal life
She married Anthony Lackey in 1972 and the pair divorced in 1990. She married Larry Dixon in 1990. Their home outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma, is described as a "2+1-story concrete dome with an octagonal wooden shell over it to make it appear more like a normal home."
Lackey and Dixon have worked in raptor recovery in the past. "She adored her children" when she refers to her various parrots as her "feathered children."
