Mel George Gaynor (born 29 May 1959 in Balham, England) is an English musician. * He is best known as the long-serving drummer for the rock band Simple Minds. * Gaynor was born to a Jamaican father and an Afro-Brazilian mother. Gaynor returned to Simple Minds in 1982 as a session drummer for the New Gold Dream album, despite being absent on six of the nine tracks. As a replacement for Mike Ogletree, he rejoined the band for the New Gold Dream tour. Except for a time (1992-1997) away from the band during the Real Life tour in 1991-92 and stayed the Simple Minds drummer until 2017. Gaynor began drumming at the age 11 and had his first professional gig at age 14. He performs as a guitarist and a record producer, in addition to drumming. Gaynor discusses The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Brown, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra as his primary influences. In addition to Simple Minds, he has performed with Elton John, Lou Reed, Meat Loaf, Samson, Kirsty MacColl, The Associates, Peter Gabriel, Peter Gabriel, The Pretenders, Anthony Browne, Little Steven, Thomas Browne, Brian May, The Rolling Stones, Goldie, Gaynor's debut on "Play That Funky Music" in 2007 was his first solo album, and his latest solo album, Addicted to Love, was released on September 12, 2016. Gaynor was also a member of Birmingham-based Muscles, a funk-oriented covers band that had minor chart success with "If It Relaxes Your Mind" and "I'm a Girlwatcher." Gaynor has played many drum sets over the years, including and recently Natal drums, and Remo drumheads. * He has played a variety of cymbals throughout his career, including at first Paiste early in his career, but then moved to Zildjian in the early 1980s after joining Simple Minds, where he played for much of his time. * At other times in his career, he has supported Anatolian, UFIP, and even Meinl cymbals. Paiste began as an official endorser again in 2011, but Vulcan Cymbals announced him as an endorser in 2018. Gaynor performs with his signature stick called Drum Art, and the same firm will also sell a signature snare drum.
