Catherine Black's role in the series had been planned with Gallagher in mind.
Early life
Gallagher was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, on February 6, 1960, to Aileen and Donald Gallagher. She was the fifth of six children in the United States. Her mother had been an actress in her youth and then resigned when she first had a family. Gallagher attributes her mother, who would bring her to Broadway theatre performances as a child, to her own career. She has also cited Mary Tyler Moore and Katharine Hepburn as influences on her work. She attended Wyomissing Area Junior/Senior High School, where she decided not to attend her high school prom in order to continue her rehearsals at a local community theatre, Genesius Theatre.
Gallagher studied at the Juilliard School in New York under John Houseman's tutelage. Penny Johnson Jerald, Lorraine Toussaint, Jack Kenny, and Jack Stehlin were among her classmates. She then moved to Los Angeles, California, to continue her education; during this time, she also took care of stray cats.
Personal life
Gallagher is married to actor Jeff Yagher and has two children, a pair of twins. She is connected by marriage to actress Catherine Hicks and make-up artist Kevin Yagher.
Career
Gallagher began her career on stage, appearing in a production of Paul Osborn's Oliver Oliver before being cast in Aaron Sorkin's A Few Good Men in 1989. JoAnne Galloway's appearance in the second film earned her a Theatre World Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award. In 1993, she appeared in Broadway productions of both the Angels' national and Perestroika: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes—Millennium Approaches and Perestroika.
Gallagher's debut television appearance was in George Washington's miniseries. She appeared in the pilot At Your Service and in the first episode of L.A. law. She then went on to appear as a series regular during Hill Street Blues' run before moving to China Beach to play a recurring role; she also has a close relationship with China Beach co-star Robert Picardo. Catherine Black's role in Millennium had been imagined by author Chris Carter, specifically because he had been impressed with her appearance on The Larry Sanders Show. Gallagher was keen to work with Carter, having adored his creation of Dana Scully for The X-Files, whom she considered a good example of an interesting female character on television. Gallagher appeared in Suits as a co-classmate Wendell Pierce while her Juilliard classmates Wendell Pierce appears.
