Early life and family
Matthew Flynn, born and raised in Tyler, Texas, is the son of Alvin and Ruth Flynn. Matthew Flynn's father, a civil attorney, was a quarterback at Baylor in the 1960s, and his mother is a former collegiate dance team director and choreographer at Kilgore College and Tyler Junior College. Matt has two brothers, Adam and Bill, and two sisters, Rebecca and Amanda.

High school career
Matthew Flynn was coached by Mike Owens at Robert E. Lee High School and worked with Justin Warren, Brandon Pettigrew, and Ciron Black. Matthew Flynn, a freshman at Davidson High School, went for 102 of 199 passes for 1,650 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions for the season, leading Lee to the 5A-I playoffs, where they lost in the second round to eventual state champion Mesh on Mayfield. He made 124 of 206 passes for 1,679 yards and 9 touchdowns as a senior and had 305 yards passing with 12 touchdowns. College career
The 2003 season at LSU marked the end of Flynn's redshirting. He was the third-string quarterback behind starter Marcus Randall and backup JaMarcus Russell in 2004. He also doubled as LSU's placekicks holder. Flynn appeared in all 12 games, but only as quarterback in three of them. Xavier Carter was credited with a 67-yard touchdown against Mississippi State in his collegiate first completion. In a 25-31 loss effort against Iowa, Flynn made a brief appearance in the 2004 Capital One Bowl, collecting 1 of four passes for 11 yards. He finished the season with four completions on ten attempts for 99 yards and 1 touchdown.
Russell and Flynn were battling for the starting quarterback position in the 2005 season after Randall's departure. Russell eventually returned to work, leaving Flynn as a back-up. In 2005, he played in seven games for the Tigers, totaling 27 of 48 passes for 457 yards, 7 touchdowns, and one interceptor. Flynn led North Texas to victory by defeating North Texas by a 7-of-7 yard total, with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Russell was hurt in the 2005 SEC Championship Game against the Georgia Bulldogs, and Flynn finished the game. Professional career
In the seventh round (209th pick overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft, Flynn was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round (209th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft. He was signed to a four-year rookie contract from July 23 until the 2011 season. Flynn took the tournament for Aaron Rodgers' back-up role in 2008, defeating fellow rookie and second-round pick Brian Brohm. Flynn was seen as less able than Brohm due to Brohm's superior size, arm, and foot speed, as well as the fact that Brohm was selected much earlier in the draft than Flynn.
Flynn's first NFL appearance against the New England Patriots on December 19, 2010, after starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers was not allowed medically to begin. Flynn threw three touchdown passes against New England, one to John Kuhn, James Jones, and Greg Jennings, but the second half ended with an interception by Kyle Arrington for a touchdown. With rookie and starting quarterback EJ Manuel out 6-8 weeks, and backup Thad Lewis hurt during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals on October 14, 2013. On October 14, 2013, he signed the Bills. He was assigned number 17 from the start of his career. Although third-string quarterback Jeff Tuel was not available in Buffalo, he did not have any playing time and mainly served as an emergency substitute, he did not see any playing time, so he may have been hurt again. Flynn was recalled by Green Bay to be the backup for Scott Tolzien on November 12, 2013 due to injuries to starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers and backup quarterback Seneca Wallace.
Flynn was brought into to help the struggling Tolzien midway through the 3rd quarter on November 24, 2013. Flynn recovered the team from a 23–7 deficit at the start of the 4th quarter. With a 23–23 score, the game went to overtime. The Packers scored first in overtime with a field goal, but the Vikings recovered the ball and scored a field goal, but the Packers lost the game due to the NFL's new regular season overtime rules. The game was tied 26–26.
Flynn will be the starting quarterback for the Thanksgiving game against the Detroit Lions on November 27, 2013. Flynn failed on 139 yards in a row of 20 attempts for 139 yards, with one interceptor and two fumbles. He was fired 7 times, one in the end zone for a safety. The Packers lost by 40–10.
