Matt Breida Life

Matthew John "Matt" Breida (born February 28, 1995) is an American football running back for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL).

He played college football at Georgia Southern and signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2017.

Early years

Breida's adoptive parents moved the family from Hudson, Florida to Spring Hill north of Tampa. There, Breida attended Nature Coast Technical High School in nearby Brooksville, Florida. He played high school football for the Sharks.

Personal life

Breida was adopted by Terri and Mike Breida on March 2, 1995. They later adopted a second child, Josh. The couple were independently disabled by chronic health problems and car accidents in 2006 and 2003, respectively. During his time at Georgia Southern, Breida volunteered as a reader and speaker at elementary schools in two states, which contributed to his nomination as a Senior Class Award finalist and Honor Roll member.

Matt Breida Career

College career

Breida played college football at Georgia Southern. He rushed for 1,485 yards (second most by a GSU sophomore to Adrian Peterson) and 17 touchdowns on 171 attempts, as a sophomore in 2014, as a sophomore. On November 15, there were 210 yards against Navy for the first time in history. As a freshman in 2015, he ran 1,609 yards (second in the conference to Larry Rose III) and a record-tying 17 touchdowns on 203 attempts. On 168 attempts, he reduced to 646 yards and three touchdowns, as a senior in 2016, as well as 11 receptions for 53 yards and two touchdowns. This drastic decrease in output was not due to injury, but it was at least partially due to first-time head coach Tyson Summers' poor transition from a triple option offense. Breida's 8.7 and 7.9 yards per carry his sophomore and junior years are the best in school history, and despite only two years in school history, he came in sixth position in total rushing yards.

Professional career

Breida was not eligible to the NFL Combine due to his bad senior year. On the Bench Press test, he did a good job on his pro day, running a 42-inch Vertical Jump, 11-Foot-2 Broad Jump, and finishing 23 reps. On May 4, 2017, Breida signed with the San Francisco 49ers, one of many undrafted free agents.

Breida served as the backup to Carlos Hyde in the 49ers' backfield for the 2017 season. Breida's rookie quarterback Derek Carrout had four rushes for 11 yards in the season's opening 23–3 home loss to the Carolina Panthers on September 10, 2017. He scored his first NFL touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles on Week 8, receiving a 21-yard pass from quarterback C. J. Beathard. In the 31–21 victory over the New York Giants on November 12, he scored his first rushing touchdown. In Week 16, against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he had a season-high 74 rushing yards and a 30-yard running touchdown. He had 72 passing yards and a 32-yard reception in the season finale, which was a 34–13 win over the Los Angeles Rams. Breida finished his rookie season with 465 passing yards, two touchdowns, 21 plays, 180 receiving yards, and a touchdown. This was third on the 6–10 team in yards from scrimmage, and 14th among NFL rookies.

Breida had hoped to help out newly signed free agent Jerick McKinnon, but McKinnon tore his ACL prior to the season, requiring him to play for the starting position with Alfred Morris. Breida started the season as a backup to Morris, but the veteran was out-gained by 46 yards in the season's opener to the Minnesota Vikings. In Week 2 against the Detroit Lions for the first time in his career, he started running with a career-high 138 passing yards (which also led the NFL in Week 2) and a touchdown as the 49ers defeated the 49ers 30–27. Colin Kaepernick's 66-yard touchdown in the third quarter was second only to his 90-yarder in 2014 for the longest run by a 49er since 2009. With veterans Morris and Raheem Mostert, who are mainly limited by minor injuries, Breida's split continues. Despite being 90 yards in the following game against the Kansas City Chiefs, he only passed for 43 yards in the next six games, losing the NFL lead in yards per attempt to Detroit's Kerryon Johnson and Cleveland's Nick Chubb in Week 8. In a Week 10 loss to the New York Giants, Breida returned to the Tampa area and collected 106 yards on 14 rushes to finish second in the NFL (behind Green Bay's Aaron Jones) with 5.8 yards-per-carry and 34 passing yards. Breida had three receptions for 51 yards against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 13, but only five rushes for six yards before being injured and missing the next game. In the second divisional game against the Seattle Seahawks, he returned two weeks later and finished with 96 yards-from-scrimmage in the victory. He had just four rushes for 20 yards against the Chicago Bears in Week 16, putting him on injured reserve for the remainder of the season. Despite numerous health problems, Breida led the team to the injury-plagued 4–12 49ers with 814 passing yards and three rushing touchdowns, and she finished second on the team only to NFL-recordsetter George Kittle with 1,075 yards-from-scrimmage. His 5.3 yards per pass was fourth among qualified NFL rushers.

Breida joined the season as a co-starter after McKinnon's recuperation, with free agent acquisition Tevin Coleman. Breida rushed for 121 yards on 12 attempts in the 41-17 road victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2. Breida beat the Cleveland Browns 31-3 after defeating them for 114 yards and an 83-yard touchdown on 11 carries in a 31-3 victory. He also caught three passes for 15 yards and a touchdown. He hit 22.30 mph on his 83-yard touchdown run, the fastest by a ball carrier on any play since the start of the previous season, making him responsible for two of the top three fastest times in the region (22.30 mph and 22.09 mph respectively). Breida was used less often as Raheem Mostert took over the second-string role late in the season.

Breida finished the 2019 season with 623 passing yards and a touchdown, as well as 19 receptions for 120 yards and a touchdown. He was fifth in the league with 5.1 yards per carry, his third season in the top ten, and his third straight season. Despite not getting much playing time in the playoffs, Breida and his 49ers made it to Super Bowl LIV, but the Kansas City Chiefs defeated them.

On Breida, the 49ers launched a second-round restricted free agent tender on March 17, 2020. He began his employment on April 16, 2020.

Breida was traded to the Miami Dolphins for a fifth-round pick, which the 49ers used to select West Virginia offensive lineman Colton McKivitz during the 2020 NFL Draft on April 25, 2020. By the Dolphins on December 4, 2020, Breida was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list and activated on December 16, 2020.

Breida signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills on March 29, 2021. Breida scored his first touchdowns with the Bills in week versus the New York Jets, despite sparingly used due to running backs Zack Moss and Devin Singletary. He rushed the ball 3 times for 28 yards and a touchdown in addition to receiving 3 passes for 22 yards and a touchdown, but he also lost a fumble.

Breida signed with the New York Giants on March 21, 2022.
