Professional career

Rudolph completed the majority of combine drills at the NFL Scout Combine, but chose not to drill the bench press, broad jump, short shuttle, and three-cone drill. He attended Oklahoma State's pro day, completed the three-cone drill, short shuttle, broad jump, and running passing drills on March 15, 2018. After finishing his pro day, he met with scouts and staff from the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, and the Los Angeles Chargers privately. He played for the New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills, New Orleans Saints, Cincinnati Bengals, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Giants, and the Los Angeles Chargers during private workouts and visits. Rudolph was expected to be a second round pick by the majority of NFL draft experts and scouts at the conclusion of the pre-draft process. DraftScout.com, Scouts Inc., and Sports Illustrated ranked him as the sixth best quarterback prospect in the draft.

Rudolph was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round (76th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. The Steelers traded their third-round (79th overall) and seventh-round (220th overall) picks to the Seattle Seahawks in order to jump three spots and select Rudolph with the 76th overall pick. Rudolph was the sixth quarterback selected in 2018.

Rudolph was signed by the Steelers on May 23, 2018, providing him with a four-year, $3.92 million contract with a signing bonus of $932,264.

Rudolph competed against Landry Jones and Joshua Dobbs for the backup position behind Ben Roethlisberger throughout training camp. Rudolph was eventually named as the third quarterback after head coach Mike Tomlin was fired as a result. Rudolph did not get a single snap in the 2018 season.

Rudolph was dubbed the second quarterback behind Roethlisberger and the Dobbs after several good preseason performances.

Rudolph helped an injured Roethlisberger in the second half of Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks, throwing for 112 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception as the Steelers barely fell by a score of 26–28. Rudolph, the Steelers' starting quarterback, following Roethlisberger's announcement that he would miss the remainder of the season due to season-ending elbow surgery. Rudolph made his first NFL appearance against the San Francisco 49ers on Week 3. In the 24-20 road loss, he threw for 174 yards, two touchdowns, and an intercept. Rudolph was involved in a brawl against the Cleveland Browns in Week 11 with eight seconds remaining in regulation. Rudolph earned a pass to running back Trey Edmunds. After the pass had been completed, Myles Garrett of the Browns met Rudolph late. Rudolph pushed Garrett's helmet down and away on the ground, attempting to get Garrett's helmet off. Garrett then grabbed Rudolph's helmet and took it off. Rudolph came after Garrett, but Garrett struck Rudolph in the head with Rudolph's own helmet. During and after this altercation, new players joined the fray, and more combat ensued. Rudolph finished with 221 passing yards, a touchdown, and four interceptions as the Steelers lost 21–7. Three players were ejected and then suspended for the incident, particularly Garrett, who was suspended for the remainder of the 2019 season. Rudolph was fined $50,000 by the league for his role in the scuffle. Rudolph later refused to press criminal charges, citing the situation as a NFL matter. Rudolph was accused of using a racial insult in the build-up to the altercation, according to Garrett, but no evidence was found to back up Garrett's assertion.

Rudolph struggled again against the Bengals this week, throwing for 85 yards and an intercept before being suspended for Devlin Hodges in the third quarter, which culminated in the Steelers' 16–10 victory. Hodges will remain the starting quarterback for the following week's game against Cleveland, according to Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. Rudolph came out of the game against the Hodges in the second quarter but later suffered a shoulder injury and ended the game in the fourth quarter. Rudolph passed for 129 yards and a touchdown during the game. The Steelers lost 10–16 without Rudolph. On December 24, 2019, it was revealed that he sustained a sternoclavicular joint dislocation in the shoulder and was placed on injured reserve. He started in eight out of the ten games in which he appeared, totaling 1,765 passing yards, 13 passing touchdowns, 9 interceptions, and a passer rating of 82.0.

Rudolph came into the game in the second quarter against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 9 after Roethlisberger went to the locker room due to an ankle injury. Rudolph had two of three passes for three yards before Roethlisberger came back in the second half. In the fourth quarter of blowout victories against the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, and Jacksonville Jaguars, Rudolph also appeared in relief of Roethlisberger.

Rudolph will begin the season finale against the Cleveland Browns on December 29, 2020, with the Steelers already locked up the AFC North. Rudolph threw for 315 yards, two touchdowns, and an intercept in the 24–22 road loss.

Rudolph signed a one-year deal with the Steelers on April 29, 2021. Rudolph was denied out with COVID-19 on Week 10 against the Detroit Lions his first appearance of the season. In the 16–16 tie, Rudolph passed for 242 yards, a touchdown, and an intercept.

Since the QB was cut in April, the Steelers are honoring Dwayne Haskins with helmet decals this season

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 9, 2022
With a No. 1, the Pittsburgh Steelers will pay tribute to late teammate Dwayne Haskins. In 2022, there was a 3 sticker on their helmets. When walking on a highway in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the 24-year-old quarterback was killed by a dump truck on April 9. At the request of newly signed signal-caller Mitch Trubisky, Haskins was training in the area with other Steelers QBs, running backs, and receivers.

In response to calls for Aaron Donald to be barred, NFL: Joint operations are 'fight factories,' says Pat McAfee

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 27, 2022
Pat McAfee, an ex-Colts punter, has condemned those calling for Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald to be suspended after swinging a helmet at Bengals players, because he believes joint activities promote combat and shouldn't be compared to games. During a joint workout, Donald shocked fans Thursday by ripping off the helmet of a Bengals player and swung it at Cincinnati players. Fans and journalists alike demanded that Donald be suspended, particularly after the Browns' Myles Garrett's six-game suspension after he swung a helmet at Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph in 2019.

Fans of Rams quarterback Aaron Donald's helmet-swinging brawl, but he may escape punishment

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 26, 2022
NFL media and fans are calling for Aaron Donald's suspension for his helmet-swinging brawl at his joint workout with the Bengals in Cincinnati on Thursday, but the league will obviously defer to his club in the matter. During a huge brawl on Thursday, Donald, a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, was seen swinging a Bengals player's helmet. In this video, Aaron Donald is the one using a helmet as a weapon,' wrote one fan on Twitter. 'How many games will the best defensive player in the NFL be suspended for?' Surprisingly, the answer may have been zero. Multiple NFL insiders, including CBS' Josina Anderson and Washington Post's Mark Maske, have confirmed that the squad will be handling discipline, not the league.
