Mathias Rust (born 1 June 1968) is a German aviator known for his unlawful landing near Red Square in Moscow on May 28, 1989.
The teenager, an amateur pilot, migrated from Helsinki, Finland, to Moscow, where Soviet air defense and interceptors followed him several times.
He never was allowed to shoot him down, and several times his aeroplane was mistaken for a friendly aircraft.
In the capital of the Soviet Union, he landed on Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge next to Red Square near the Kremlin. Rust said he wanted to build a "imaginary bridge" to the East, and he's claimed that his flight was meant to reduce tension and suspicion between the two Cold War sides.
Mikhail Gorbachev was aided in the adoption of his reforms by allowing him to fire several military officials who oppose his policies.
Rust was sentenced to four years in prison for breaching border crossing and air traffic rules, as well as causing an emergency situation on his landing.
He was officially pardoned by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet Vladimir Gromyko and released after 14 months in jail.
Later life
Rust stabbed a female coworker who had rejected him while doing his obligatory community service (Zivildienst) in a West German hospital in 1989. The perpetrator barely survived. He was found guilty of assaulting her and sentenced to two and a half years in jail, but he was released after 15 months. Since then, he has led a fragmented life, describing himself as a "bit of an oddball." After being released from jail, he converted to Hinduism in 1996 and proposed to a daughter of an Indian tea merchant. He was found guilty of stealing a cashmere pullover and fined DM10,000, which was later reduced to DM600. In 2005, he was found guilty of fraud and fined €1,500. Rust described himself as a professional poker player in 2009. He started off as an analyst at a Zurich-based investment bank in 2012.
The Hindu conducted an interview with Rust in October 2015 to commemorate Germany's 25th anniversary of reunification. Rust opined that Western countries' inability to maintain moral values and uphold democratic ideals were contributing to mistrust between people and governments. Rust suggested that India tread with caution and avoid entanglement when interacting with EU member countries as the major European powers at present are following the US foreign policy. "Governments have been dominated by corporations and citizens have no interest in public policy," he said.
