Mary Murphy Life

Mary Ann Murphy (born 1957) is an American ballroom dance champion, licensed dance judge, and a judge and choreographer on the Fox dance competition-reality show So You Can Dance.

Early life and education

Mary Murphy was born in Lancaster, Ohio, in an Irish family. She graduated from Northwest High School in Canal Fulton, Ohio. Murphy, a graduate of Ohio University with a degree in physical education and a minor in modern dance, then migrated to Washington, D.C., to begin her career.

Personal life

Murphy has been married three times and has revealed that she was a victim of domestic violence in her first marriage, which spanned nine years. On Larry King Live in October 2010, she announced that she was finally speaking out so that others could find out how she survived, but not domestic violence. Her first husband denies physically or mentally abusing her.

Murphy divorced amicably with her third husband, Phillip Gott, who is still an employee of her ballroom dance academy, in 2008. Murphy made amends with her second husband in his last days fighting cancer on May 28, 2011. Murphy said on her online blog on July 22, 2011: "I'm also saying goodbye to my ex husband today" as cancer has claimed another special person from my life." Even though our marriage didn't work out, we became good friends. I will miss him, but I will forever love him."

It was revealed that she had undergone thyroid cancer surgery as a permanent judge on season 8 of So You Think You Can Dance in 2011. Although there was a chance that she would never be able to talk again, she now is cancer-free with vocal cords intact.

Mary Murphy Career

Career

She answered a newspaper advertisement for studio instructor trainees. She became an instructor after just one week, and the studio owner encouraged her to attend the United States Ballroom Championships in New York City, which was the event that prompted her to pursue a career in ballroom dancing.

Murphy migrated to California and began looking for a dance partner while teaching as an instructor. She met Manfred Stiglitz during the United Kingdom Open Championships in England, and a dancing partnership was formed. The two teams began to compete, and they were then named as the 1990 and 1991 Austrian National Champions. Despite their triumph, Murphy's domestic commitments and constant travel took their toll. Murphy founded the Champion Ballroom Academy in San Diego in 1990 and found it difficult to decide between these two commitments.

She began a five-year journey with a partner based in California, winning awards at the Southwest Regional Dance Tournament, the Saint Louis Star Ball, and the International Grand Ball. Murphy won the U.S. Open Standard final in a remarkable six months with partner Bill Milner. In 1996, she and partner Jim Desmond reached the U.S. Open American Smooth competition finals and took home the U.S. Open American Nine Dance title. She moved away from sport and toward her dance academy.

In the film Something to Talk About and starring Vanessa L. Williams, she appeared as a dance double for Julia Roberts.

She appeared in Degrassi Takes Manhattan as a servant at a casino wedding chapel in 2010.

She currently owns and operates the Hollywood Dance Championships in Los Angeles. She has competed in a variety of tournaments, including the National Ballroom Championships in the United States.

When season 1 began in 2005, Murphy was part of the original guest judge and choreographer pool. She made increasing appearances at the judging table in 2006, especially for season 2. Murphy was appointed as a permanent judge in 2007, just as long as Nigel Lythgoe did.

Murphy appeared on international versions of So You Think You Can Dance, So You Think You Can Dance Australia, So You Believe You Can Dance In 2008, and So You Think You Can Dance Scandinavia.

Murphy resurfaced on season 4 with fellow judge Nigel Lythgoe, and Dmitry Chaplin performed a surprise samba on the season finale. Murphy served as a weekly permanent judge on season 5 and 6.

Mia Michaels will replace Murphy as permanent judge for season 7. Despite being unable to attend the majority of the season, Murphy took a seat at the judging table for Vegas Week and the final episode. Mia Michaels was revived as a permanent judge for season 8.

Murphy ruled the Broadway ballroom dance performance Burn the Floor from December 22, 2009, to January 10, 2010. She was partnered with Vaind Skimelis.

Murphy, who appeared in San Jose and San Diego with Vain Skimelis, returned to the touring cast of Burn the Floor in September and October 2010.
