By Carson Mlnarik Listeners were captivated, intrigued, and scandalized by a rapper's shameless portrayals of gay rights on March 25, 2021. Lil Nas X says, "When I'm ridin', he says "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)," complete with a clear picture in which he makes out with himself in the Garden of Eden and, of course, gives Satan a lap dance. Critics characterized it as a "unabashedly queer" work of art, something the artist nodded to when he took home Best of the Year at the 2021 VMAs. During his acceptance address, Lil Nas X said, "I want to say thank you to the gay campaign," referring not only to a defining moment for a young artist but also a landmark for queer representation.
