Mary Jo Buttafuoco Career

Career

Buttafuoco wrote a book about her experience, Getting It Through My Thick Skull: Why I Stayed, What I Learned, and What Millions of People Involved with Sociopaths Need to Know Sixteen years after the event. Since her son referred to her ex-husband as a sociopath, she was inspired to write the book. Not knowing what the word meant, she checked it up and had a realization that led to her going public with her tale. The book's name comes from a woman who used it with her children, "when is it going to get it into your thick skull?" The memoir chronicles her life, rather than merely focusing on her shooting. She relates how she was manipulated to stay with someone who was a sociopath. The book, which was published in July 2009, was "strangely convincing" and said, "Readers will want to know if she stays with him."

Buttafuoco has shared her experience to raise the issue of facial paralysis.
