Mrten Hagström, born 27th April 1971, is Sweden's leading rhythm guitarist for the Swedish progressive metal band Meshuggah.
He joined the band after the band's first album, which allowed Jens Kidman to concentrate on his vocal appearances rather than on rhythm guitar duties.
Fredrik Thordendal, a fellow Meshuggah guitarist, is known for their intricate rhythm guitar playing.
As influences, Hagström has cited Rush, James Hetfield, Squarepusher, Autechre, Strapping Young Lad, and GISM. "You can't play an instrument for the scientific accuracy of it," he said in a Metal Injection interview. It's a tool you use to get what's in here and there [heart and mind] out of here." He has also stated that the prevailing trend in guitar playing was for more virtuosic lead playing as he began learning guitar, and that instead, he concentrated on creating his intricate rhythm guitar style. Despite the fact that Thordendal appears in majority of Meshuggah's guitar solos, the two guitarists share songwriting duties more or less alike, with Hagström starring "Nothing" from Destroy Erase Improve, and "Neurotica" from Chaosphere.
Hagström has also stepped out of his role of playing solely rhythm guitar with the introduction of Meshuggah's obZen album by playing the slower, melodic leads on the songs he wrote, including "Electric Red" and "Pravus." In addition to this, he has written lyrics for several of the band's later releases, co-writing Catch 33 with Meshuggah drummer Tomas Haake, and penning the entire text for their abstract EP I. Hagström and Haake have been playing music together since they were nine years old. Hagström and Thordendal were ranked #35 by Guitar World in their top 100 best heavy metal guitarists of all time, alongside Thordendal.
