Marta Rovira (Vic) was born 25 January 1977, a Catalonia and Spanish lawyer who has left Spain to avoid being heard by the Spanish Supreme Court and now lives in Geneva, Switzerland, and she was named National Secretary of International Politics and Cooperation in 2005.

She was elected general secretary by the 26th National Congress (2011).

Rovira obtained a seat in Catalonia's Parliament during 2012 and 2015, and as part of the pro-independence party Yes! Rovira was the representative-secretary of the Young Lawyers Association of Catalonia (2006–2007), the founder of the Group of Young Lawyers of Vic (2004–2006), a member of the Platforma Solida (1998), and a representative of the students association Jurists without boundaries (1997–1999).

She is also a member of the Sagals of Osona.

After the Catalan declaration of independence, she was arrested for sedition on December 22, 2017.

Rovira moved to Spain on March 23, 2018 to avoid attending a Supreme Court summons, saying she had chosen the "path to exile."

Political career

Marta Rovira has been a member of Esquerra Republicana since 2005. She was elected National Secretary for International, European, and Cooperation politics during the party's 25th National Congress, which took place in 2008. She was also the General Secretary of the European Free Alliance for the first year and until 2012.

She was elected general secretary of Esquerra Republican General Secretary Paula at the 26th National Congress (2011). She assumed the leadership of the party together with Oriol Junqueras, president of Esquerra Republicana.

She was elected to the Catalan Parliament in 2012 and was the spokesperson for the Esquerra Republican Party's Congress between 2012 and 2015. She was also elected representative and spokesperson of the parliamentary party in 2015 and again in the Catalan elections, this time as part of the pro-independence coalition Junts pel S.

Marta Rovira and Oriol Junqueras led Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (Catalunya S campaign in Barcelona, Spain's first constituency, during the 2017 municipal elections. Esquerra Republicana gained 32 seats.

Rovira's key political motivations are the defense of human rights, particularly women's rights, social justice, and Catalonia's independence. Rovira is a republican who promotes republicanism as a model that balances the common interest and the common good, equal opportunities, and zero corruption. Rovira, a pro-independence activist, argues that republican ideals can only be fulfilled in a Catalan Republic, and that a referendum that allows Catalans to vote their destiny must be won.

On December 22, 2017, she was charged by the Spanish Supreme Court for a suspected crime of rebellion for her presence in the organization of the referendum on self-determination. She was summoned to appear in the same court on 19 February 2018 and later released on a €60,000 bail. Judge Pablo Llarena summoned those investigated in the case to the 23rd of March to inform them of the indictment and assess their provisional release status.

Rovira resigned, alongside Carme Forcadell and Dolors Bassa, as a member of Parliament, on March 22, 2018. She opted not to appear before the Supreme Court on the following day, saying she did not have enough judicial guarantees and went into exile in Switzerland, where she now lives.

Judge Pablo Llarena issued a European and international arrest warrant as well as an extradition request against Rovira on the same day, in addition to those arrested against Carles Puigdemont, Antoni Comn, Llu's Puig, Meritxell Serratt, and Clara Ponsat.

Llarena released all European and international arrest warrants on July 19, 2018, including Rovira's, in reaction to the German judiciary's ruling against the release of Carles Puigdemont for the crime of rebellion.
