Calls grow for London to get a New York-style 'rat czar' to stop the city becoming overwhelmed - as expert confirms the rodents are getting bigger

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 2, 2024
It comes after former elementary school teacher Kathleen Corradi was announced as the first-ever Citywide Director of Rodent Mitigation in April, a position previously dubbed by New York's Mayor as 'rat czar'. The 34-year-old rat-catcher has had a passion for eliminating vermin since she was just 10-years-old and will lead a team of rodent experts to deal with city's critical rat problem. Sightings doubled in the last year, according to city data. Pest expert Mark Moseley, who was a candidate on The Apprentice in 2023, said he supported the idea of having a person dedicated to tackling the issue in the UK's capital. He told MailOnline: 'I do think it's a good idea to have someone appointed to specifically look at the problem and try and collect data from companies - councils in particular - and see what the correlation is. 'Why are certain areas get more rats? Is it to do with more people living there, or maybe there's less bin collections, so on and so forth. And they will sort of work it out.'

A massive rat invasion is underway, as a result of severe weather and floods, oversized vermin are being pushed into people's homes

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 13, 2024
Over the past 90 days, the British Pest Control Association (BPCA) said it has seen a 115 percent increase in people seeking advice on controlling rats. According to the BBC, there could be around 250 million rats in the UK, and severe weather has caused millions of them to be indoors. During the winter season, Natalie Bungay, BPCA's technical manager, said, "It's normal to see an increase in rat infestations as rats and mice are searching for warm, dry shelter with access to a food source." Overflowing wheelie bins and black bags full of garbage are basically a buffet for rodents, and disruption to bin collections over the festive period can also be a factor.' Foxes can be seen tearing overflowing garbage cans apart and spilling the contents, which encourages rats to come from the sewers to feed on the garbage. When looking for protection, floods in the United Kingdom have pushed the rats from their underground nests to buildings.

Armies of'super rats' are taking over Britain

Mark Moseley, a pest control specialist, said the decreasing effectiveness of rodenticides and a rise in food waste as a result of Britain's increasing population is triggering a rise in rat numbers. According to the entrepreneur, the lockdown had caused more rats to search for food in urban areas, where they were being encouraged to stay by abundant food waste and people feeding birds in their gardens. Owners have shared their own horror tales, with one claiming rats were stealing bananas from the fruit bowl at night and another saying a neighbor was forced to leave after rats started scurrying across her bed at night.

Lord Sugar was 'furious' at the decision, and 'couldn't believe someone would risk losing his £250,000 investment for the sake of a drink,' a TV source told MailOnline. However, the head of a Glaswegian theatre school remains determined that he did not leave of his own volition after deciding to 'listen' to his body. And last night, he earned the support of his former Apprentice colleagues, including Shannon Martin (top) Brad Johnson (bottom), who rallied around him by posting social media messages that said, 'health is wealth.'
