Mark Gasser (born 6 July 1972) is a British concert pianist.
Career
Gasser was born in Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire, in 1972, to Austrian and Scottish parents. He studied with John Humphreys at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and with Frank Wibaut at the Royal Academy of Music, and he is a fellow of both institutions. Later, he continued to study with Alfred Brendel and Peter Donohoe.
Gasser performs piano works from around the world, including the Viennese Classics (Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert) and Grieg, Mendelsohn, Busoni, and Rachmaninoff, as well as French Impressionists Debussy and Ravel. His collection includes everything from Bach's Goldberg Variations to Messiaen's Vingt take on l'enfant Jésus, as well as collaborations with living composers.
He has appeared at all major chamber music festivals in the United States, Europe, and Australia, as a chamber musician, and he has appeared with virtuo cellist Mats Lidström.
More than 70 works are on display in his concerto collection, ranging from Bach to music from the present day. Gasser collaborates with contemporary composers, has premiered and recorded compositions by twentieth-century composers such as Alfred Schnittke, Ross Edwards, Constant Lambert, Toru Takemitsu, George Crumb, James MacMillan, Michael Tippett, James Payne, Theodore, Catherine Dillon, John Clement, Thomas Bingham, John Clegg, John Bingham, John Culez, Giulez, Nicolas Dutton, John Adams, Robert Burning Gasser has also worked with experimental artists, including Pink, Jarvis Cocker, and Björk.
On DSCH at Carnegie Hall, Gasser performed Stevenson's Passacaglia, raising money for the families of rescue workers who died in the September 11 attacks, as well as the new introduction of Yamaha's CFX Concert Grand Piano in Australia shortly after the September 11 attacks.
Gasser, a founding member of the Thallein Ensemble, has appeared in some of the world's top concert halls and concert festivals, as well as as a soloist in a number of symphony orchestras. In 2002, he was named "Bösedorfer Artist of the Year." Since October 21, 2009 Gasser has been an exclusive Yamaha Artist.
Gasser, a member of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in Perth, Western Australia, from 2011 to 2013. He also received the award of PhD. Gasser, the Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts in Brisbane, Queensland, served as CEO and Artistic Director from 2013 to 2015. He now lives in Melbourne.
