Richard Wright Life

Richard William Wright (28 July 1943 – September 15, 2008) was an English guitarist, composer, and songwriter.

He was a founding member, keyboardist, and vocalist of Pink Floyd, appearing on all but one of the group's albums, including The Piper at Dawn, Wish You Were Here and The Division Bell, and touring on all of their tours.

After being introduced by frontman and songwriter Syd Barrett, the company found commercial success in 1967 before Barrett's demise, which culminated in him being replaced by David Gilmour and Wright with Waters' songwriting duties.

Wright, who was primarily a straightforward singer/songwriter, later served as an arranger to Waters and Gilmour's arrangements.

He started contributing less towards the end of the 1970s and left the band after touring The Wall in 1981.

In 1987 for A Momentary Lapse of Reason, he returned to the band as a session player and then for The Division Bell's full time member.

On the album The Endless River, Wright's sessions during this period were later revealed.

Wright, away from Pink Floyd, released two solo albums, including a collaboration with Anthony Moore on Broken China, and briefly formed the duo Zee.

He joined Waters, Mason, and Gilmour's regular solo touring band in 2005, taking occasional lead on songs such as "Arnold Layne" until his death in September 2008. Wright was the most reserved member of Pink Floyd, overshadowed by bandmates Barrett, Waters, and Gilmour.

His contributions have often been ignored, but his death prompted a reexacerbation and acknowledgement of his abilities.

His jazz and improvisation influences, as well as keyboard performances, were a vital part of the Pink Floyd sound.

Wright performed regularly in the band and occasionally took the lead vocal on Pink Floyd songs such as "Time," "Remember a Day" and "Wearing the Outside Out," as well as being a key player of the Farfisa and Hammond organs and the Kurzweil synthesizer.

Early life

Wright, whose father, a head biochemist at Unigate, grew up in Hatch End, Middlesex, and was educated at the Haberdashers' Aske's School. While recovering from a broken leg, he taught himself to play guitar, trombone, trumpet, and piano at age 12. His mother urged him to concentrate on the piano. He took private lessons in music theory and composition at the Eric Gilder School of Music and was inspired by the trad jazz revival, playing the saxophone alongside other instruments, but he was still focusing on piano. Wright, who was still uncertain about his future, enrolled in Regent Street Polytechnic (later added to University of Westminster) to study architecture in 1962. Roger Waters and Nick Mason were among the three musicians on site, and the three of them, Clive Metcalf, formed Sigma 6.

Personal life

Juliette Gale, Wright's first wife, married him in 1964. She had been a member of one of the early bands that developed into Pink Floyd. In 1982, the couple had two children and divorced. Franka's second marriage lasted between 1984 and 1994. In 1995, Wright married Mildred "Millie" Hobbs, with whom he had a son, Ben. Broken China, Wright's 1996 solo album, is about her battle with depression. In 2007, the couple separated. Gala was married by Wright's daughter Gala to Floyd and Gilmour touring bassist Guy Pratt.

Wright had been admiring the Greek islands since a sabbatical visit in 1964, before Pink Floyd appeared. He moved to Greece in 1984 after the Zee project, briefly resigned from music and into sailing and yachting. Wright spent time on a yacht he owned in the Virgin Islands in his later years. He found sailing therapeutic, relieving him of the pressures of the music industry. He was also a rug collector.
