Mark Fidrych Life

Mark Steven Fidrych (August 14, 1954-May 13, 2009), also known as "The Bird," was a Major League Baseball pitcher.

He played for the Detroit Tigers from 1976 to 1980. Fidrych led the major leagues in 1976 with a 2.34 ERA, gained the AL Rookie of the Year award, and finished with a 19-9 record.

Soon after, injuries mounted, and his major league career came to an end after only five seasons.

Early life

Fidrych, the son of an assistant school principal, played baseball at Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough, Massachusetts, and Worcester Academy, a day and boarding school in central Massachusetts. He was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 10th round of the 1974 amateur draft. He later joked that he had been called and drafted, not realizing there were any teams investigating him. One of his mentors with the Lakeland Tigers dubbed him "The Bird" because of his resemblance to the "Big Bird" character on the popular Sesame Street television show.
