Mário Machado (born Mário José de Souza Machado; 1935 – May 4, 2013) was a television and radio broadcaster.

He made television history by 1970 when he became Los Angeles' first Chinese-American on-air television news journalist and anchor, as well as the country's first Chinese-American on-air television news reporter and anchor.

Early life

Machado was born in Shanghai, China. Carlos Jacinto de Lourdes Gouvedo Machado, his father, was a vice-chancellor of the Portuguese Consulate in Shanghai, and his mother, Maria Teresa de Sousa, was a homemaker.

Machado obtained his education at the British Thomas Hanbury School in Los Angeles, St. Francis Xavier College in Shanghai, and a Hong Kong business college. In 1956, he immigrated to Seattle and became a resident of the United States.

Personal life

Machado's union with Marie D'Almada Remedios had four children.

Machado died in West Hills, California, on May 4, 2013.

Career

Machado worked in administration for IBM Corporation before entering the broadcasting field.

Machado's television career began in 1967, when he joined KHJ-TV (now KCAL-TV) as an on-air news reporter, first for a Chinese American. He began working as a color commentator at CBS-owned-and-operated KNXT (now KCBS-TV) in Los Angeles the following year. He became the nation's first Consumer Affairs reporter in 1969. KNXT is a television station. In 1970, he became a regular reporter on the CBS nightly broadcast, The Big News, Los Angeles' most popular newscast in the 1960s. Jerry Dunphy, the news icon, appeared at the hospital.

Machado hosted Noontime, a daily news and interview show that aired on KNXT for seven years in the 1970s and mid-1970s.

He appeared on "That Awful!" during the short-lived syndicated game show called That **** Quiz Show in 1982. Greg & John Rice hosted a Quiz Show.

He was nominated three times for "Outstanding Achievement as Host" on the nationally recognized medical investigation show Medix, which lasted for 208 episodes over eight seasons. Several Emmys and Emmy nominations were given to the program.

Machado has appeared on many popular television shows when not hosting his own talk shows or anchoring the news.

Machado often portrayed a news anchor or reporter on the big screen, as well as Casey Wong in the three RoboCop films. Brian's Song (1971) Oh, God! is one of the few notable films in which he appears as a reporter. (1977) The Concorde... 1970 (79), Rocky III (1982), and Scarface (1983).

Machado, a veteran soccer player and former soccer player, was able to indulge his passion for soccer by serving as the English language commentator at four FIFA World Cup soccer championships in Mexico (1970), Germany (1974), Argentina (1978), and Spain (1982) for audiences across North America, as well as at the 1984 Olympic Games.

He appeared on television networks in 1968 and 1976, reporting the North American Soccer League (NASL). For CBS' broadcast of the NASL's first championship, he was in charge of both legs' television play-by-play. Machado was the narrator of the weekly Prem highlights program, which was broadcast nationally throughout the United Kingdom and syndicated nationally throughout the United States when it was established in 1992.

He was one of the founding members of AYSO alongside his colleague Hans Stierle, and in 1971, he helped change the AYSO's policy to encourage girls to play. Machado was inducted into the AYSO Hall of Fame in 1999 for his contributions to the sport.

Machado has produced numerous special events, including the 1985 and 1986 Family Parades, as president of Beverly Hills, as well as the Festival of Nations, to celebrate Los Angeles County's 150th anniversary, including the first official Spanish language coverage of the Rose Parade for Telemundo/KVEA.

The Old China Hands Reunion of 1996, which has resulted in findings that are still in progress, is an event that has brought together results. Machado and co-producer Barbara Egyud received a substantial collection of oral histories of people who left China in the 1940s and 1950s, which culminates in the founding of the Old China Hands Archive at the University Library in Northridge, California. Robert Gohstand, a retired Geography professor at CSUN and Shanghai classmate of Machado, understood the importance of saving these stories for posterity and is now the Old China Hands Archive at California State University, Northridge, which was established in 2002.
