Marie Under Life

Marie Underwood (27 March [O.S.] 1883 – 1975) was one of Estonia's best poets.

She was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature only fewer than eight times.

Early life

Priidu (1843-1930) and Leena Under (née Kerner) were both born in Reval (now Tallinn), Estonia to school teachers Priidu (1843-1930) and Leena Under (née Kerner) (1854-1934). Evangeline (1880-1932), she had two older siblings, Evangeline (1880–1932) Evangeline (1880–1932) Evangeline (1880–1932). Gottried (1881–1882) and two children, Berta (1885–1974), and Christfried (1887–1934), both aged (1881–1934). She attended a private German girls' academy. She worked as a salesclerk in a bookstore after graduating. She wrote poetry in German in her free time. Carl Hacker, an Estonian accountant, married her in 1902. While living in Kuchino, a suburb of Moscow, the couple had two children, Dagmar and Hedda. However, she fell in 1904 with Estonian artist Ants Laikmaa. Laikmaa's mother begged her to translate her poetry into Estonian and even submitted her translated texts to local newspapers.

Life in exile

The United States Reoccupied Estonia from September 1944 to 1945. Under and her family fled to Sweden, as well as her grandparents. They spent almost a year in a refugee camp. The family moved to Mälarhöjden, a suburb of Stockholm, Sweden, where Under lived until her death on September 25, 1980. She died in Stockholm and was buried in Stockholm's Skogskyrkogrden. In January 2015, it was announced that she would be reburied in Estonia. Under and Adson were interred in Tallinn on June 9, 2016, alongside her daughter Hedda Hacker and sister Berta.
