Jaan Kaplinski Life

Jaan Kaplinski (born in Tartu, 19 January 1941) is an Estonian poet, scholar, and culture critic.

Kaplinski is known for his free mind, global problems, and his encouragement for left-wing/liberal thinking.

He has been inspired by Eastern philosophical schools (particularly buddhism) at Tartu University, graduating as a French philologist and ecologist, editor, and ecologist at the Tallinn Botanic Garden, and a narrator.

He has been nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Early life and education

Kaplinski was born in Tartu to Polish teacher Jerzy Kaplinski and Estonian dancer Nora Raudsepp-Kaplinski. At the University of Tartu, he studied Romance language and linguistics, graduating as a French philologist in 1964.

Personal life

Nora (Raudsepp) was Estonian, and Kaplinski's mother, Nora (Raudsepp), was Estonian. Jerzy Bonifacy Edward Kaplinski, a Polish professor of philology at Tartu University, was detained by Soviet troops and died of starvation in a Soviet labour camp in 1945. Leon Kapliski, a Polish painter and political activist, was his great-uncle. Kaplinski, a young boy, began to believe that his father had distant Jewish ancestry and that he was a distant cousin of Jacob Frank.

Kaplinski was married to writer and director of the Tartu Toy Museum in Tiia Toomet. They had three sons and one daughter, Ott-Siim Toomet, Lauris Kaplinski, Lemmit Kaplinski, and Elo-Mall Toomet. From his first marriage to Küllike Kaplinski, he had a daughter, translator Maarja Kaplinski. He had a long-term relationship with Estonian classical philologist and translator Anne Lill, with whom he had a son, composer Märt-Matis Lill.
