Maria Joo Alexandre Pires (born 23 July 1944) is a Portuguese classical pianist.
Early life and education
Pires was born in Lisbon, Portugal, and his companion, Alzira dos Santos Barbosa, was born. Hugo Alexandre Pires, Maria Regina Alexandre Barbosa Pires, Maria Regina Alexandre Barbosa Pires, and Maria Helena Alexandre Barbosa Pires are three of her three siblings.
At the age of five, she had performed Mozart piano concertos for the first time. She was awarded Portugal's top prize for young musicians two years ago. She studied with Campos Coelho at the Lisbon Conservatory in the following years, taking courses in composition, research, and history of music. She continued her studies in Germany, first in the Musikakademie of Munich with Rosl Schmidt, and then in Hanover with Karl Engel.
Career
When she won the Beethoven Bicentennial Competition in Brussels in 1970, she gained international renown. She continued to appear with major orchestras in Europe, America, Canada, Israel, and Japan, interpreting works by Bach, Beethoven, Schumann, Schubert, Brahms, Chopin, and other classical and romantic composers.
Her professionalism was recognized around the world when a film (from 1999) attracted the newspaper's attention and went viral in 2013. She realized she had rehearsed for a different Mozart concerto from the one the orchestra had begun playing at a lunchtime concert in Amsterdam, and she quickly recovered by playing the correct concerto from memory.
In 2010, Pires appeared at the BBC Proms. In an interview before, she said that after 60 years of recitals and concerts, she had cut back her appearances but that she was unconcerned about retirement.
She served as a Master in Residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Waterloo, Belgium, from 2012 to 2016, where she gave piano lessons and master classes to young talented pianists from around the world. Partitura Project was launched in order to foster young musicians.
She announced her exit from the stage and tours for 2018, but she kept performing shows in 2017.
Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona conferred a Doctorate Honorary Degree on February 20, 2019.
