Margot Frank Life

Margot Betti Frank (February or March 1945) was the eldest daughter of Otto Frank and Edith Frank, as well as Anne Frank's older sister.

The Frank family has been forced into hiding as a result of Margot's deportation order from the Gestapo.

Anne, Margot's younger sister's diary, kept a notebook of her own, but no trace of Margot's diary was ever discovered.

She died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

Early life and education

Margot Betti Frank, named after her maternal aunt Bettina Holländer (1898-1914), was born in Frankfurt and lived in the city's outer suburbs with her parents, Otto Frank and Edith Frank-Holländer, as well as her younger sister Anne Frank. Edith and Otto were dedicated parents who were keen on academic pursuits and had a large library; they encouraged the children to read. The family lived in a house in Marbachweg 307 in Frankfurt-Dornbusch, where they rented two floors at the time when Anne was born. Margot and Anne spent almost every day in the garden with the children of the neighborhood. They came from a variety of faiths, whether Catholic, Protestant, or Jewish. They expressed curiosity in regard to each other's religious holidays. Margot was invited to the communion of one of her acquaintances, and her neighbors' children were often invited to the Frank's celebration of Hanukkah. The family migrated to Ganghoferstrasse 24 in Dornbusch's fashionable liberal district of Dichterviertel in 1931 (Poets' Quarter). Both buildings are still exist.

Sturmabteilung (SA), the Nazis' paramilitary Wing, marched through Frankfurt am Main in 1932, wearing swastika armbands. "When Jewish blood spurts from the knife, everything will be back to normal." These Brownshirts, as they were named because of the color of their uniforms, screamed: "When Jewish blood spurts from the knife." Anne and Otto's parents discussed their dissatisfaction with each other at this point. They were unable to leave their homeland straight away because going to an international location seemed incomprehensible.

Margot studied at the Ludwig-Richter School in Frankfurt until Adolf Hitler's appointment on January 30th of 1933 to the position of chancellor in Germany. With his ascension to office, an increase of anti-Jewish policies were introduced, one of which was the dismissal of Jewish schoolchildren from non-denominational institutions. The family decided to follow the 63,000 other Jews who had left Germany that year and immigrate to Amsterdam, Netherlands, in reaction to the increasing tide of Antisemitism. Edith Frank and her children moved in with her mother in Aachen in the summer of 1933, when Otto Frank's business Opekta was founded in Amsterdam. Edith moved back and forth between Aachen and Amsterdam in order to find accommodation in the Dutch capital. In December 1933, Margot and Anne followed Jane in February 1934. Margot was enrolled in an elementary school in Amsterdam's Jekerstraat, close to their new address on Merwedeplein, in the southern part of Amsterdam. Margot became a popular student despite initial difficulties with the Dutch language. She had a fruitful academic career.

Life in hiding

When Margot went into hiding, she was sixteen years old. At first, she shared a bedroom with Anne, but Margot slept in her parents' bedroom when Fritz Pfeffer entered the Secret Annex in November 1942. Margot Frank and her family were only able to survive in secrecy because four office workers from her father's company were able to care for them at a cost of their own lives. Miep Gies, Bep Voskuijl, Johannes Kleiman, and Victor Kugler were among the volunteers. Because the eight people in hiding in the Secret Annex were difficult to detect, the workers, visitors to the company, and neighbors were not able to identify them. During working hours, Margot and the other people in hiding had to be completely silent, and there was no way to drink any water. Margot read a lot during the day, and like Anne and Peter, she spent a lot of time researching. Margot took a correspondence course in Latin, not under her own name, but under the name of Bep Voskuijl, one of the helpers.
