Marthaniel "Marcus" Roberts (born August 7, 1963) is an American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and instructor.
Early life
Roberts was born in Jacksonville, Florida, United States. His mother went blind as a child, and his father, a longshoreman, was a gospel singer. Roberts began playing the piano at his church at age five, before his parents bought one at eight years old. In St. Augustine, Florida, the alma mater of Ray Charles, he attended the Florida School for the Blind. Roberts began teaching himself piano at an early age, taking his first lesson at the age of 12, and then studying with Leonidas Lipovetsky while attending Florida State University.
Career
Roberts replaced pianist Kenny Kirkland in Wynton Marsalis' band in the 1980s. His music, as well as Marsalis', is rooted in the old jazz of the past. Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller have influenced his style more than McCoy Tyner and Bill Evans, with a focus on ragtime and stride piano rather than bebop. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Savannah Music Festival sponsored Roberts' debut piano concerto, Spirit of the Blues: a C Minor Concerto. He has appeared in symphony orchestras with Marin Alsop (1992) and Seiji Ozawa. In September 2014, he returned to Japan to perform with Ozawa and the Saito Kinen Festival Orchestra.
Roberts formed The Modern Jazz Generation in 2012, which released its first album in October 2014. It has 12 musicians ranging from the early 20s to the 50s, with 12 ranging in age from the early 20s to the 50s. He served as both the associate artistic director of the Savannah Music Festival and the president of the annual Swing Central high school band competition. He is a professor at the University of Florida State.

On April 22, Roberts was named an honorary doctorate from Brigham Young University (BYU) for the 2021 commencement. The degree of Doctor of Civic Engagement Through Music, given by BYU, for his lifetime and contributions to society and the planet. "We must take time to really see each individual, especially those who don't look or act like us," Roberts said in his address because our ties will strengthen, and we will gain more sense of unity and love with each other." Roberts performed a special piano musical arrangement of the gospel hymn "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" as part of his address. The degree conferral and address were video-recorded in Boston the previous weekend and were later shown at BYU's commencement.
Roberts has been named as the country's best visiting professor of music for the 2020-21 academic year.
