Marcus Krüger (born 27 May 1990) is a Swedish professional ice hockey centreman who is currently playing for the ZSC Lions of the National League (NL).
He was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fifth round, 149th overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
He is a two time Stanley Cup champion with the Blackhawks in 2013 and 2015. Before joining the Blackhawks, Krüger previously played for Stockholm-based Djurgårdens IF of the Swedish Elite League.
Krüger represents Sweden in international play, helping his country capture a bronze medal at the junior level and a silver medal in senior international play.
Playing career
On October 18, 2009, Krüger was announced as the first of four contenders for the 2009–10 Elitserien Rookie of the Year after a prolific season with five goals and 11 assists in just 13 games.
In June 2010, Krüger signed a three-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks but chose to stay with Djurgrden during the first year of the union. On March 23, 2011, he was recalled from Djurgrden to Chicago. Krüger's first full season with the Blackhawks was 2011–12, scoring nine goals and adding 17 assists.
Krüger scored his first Stanley Cup playoff goal, beating Minnesota Wild goaltender Josh Harding in Game 5 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals on April 9, 2013. The Blackhawks eventually captured the 2013 Stanley Cup, with Krüger contributing three goals during the team's tenure. Krüger has signed a two-year contract with the Blackhawks following his playoff success with the team on July 12.
In 81 games for Chicago during the 2013-2014 NHL season, he scored eight goals and 20 assists. He scored the game-winning triple overtime away goal against the Anaheim Ducks on May 19, 2015, tying the Western Conference finals 1–1.
On September 11, 2015, Krüger agreed to a one-year, 1.5 million dollar deal to remain with the Blackhawks for the 2015-2016 season. In a game against the Edmonton Oilers on December 17, Krüger dislocated his wrist. While recovering from the injury, he was expected to miss at least four months. The Blackhawks announced on February 27th that Krüger will be changed to 22 in order for his new teammate, Andrew Laddd, to keep his traditional number 16. The Blackhawks announced on March 9, that Krüger had signed a three-year, $9.25 million contract extension through the 2018–19 season.
Krüger was long rumored as a candidate for removal due to significant salary cap space limitations after his seventh season with the Blackhawks. Despite a reported contract with the Vegas Golden Knights awaiting draft considerations, Krüger stayed with Chicago through the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft. The Blackhawks traded Krüger to the Golden Knights on July 2nd, 2017 in exchange for future considerations. In a trade to the Carolina Hurricanes for a 5th-round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Krüger was then sent by the Golden Knights on July 4, 2017. By the Hurricanes on January 3, 2018, Krüger was put on injured reserve and was placed on waivers.
Krüger was originally traded by the Hurricanes to the Arizona Coyotes in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, along with forward Jordan Martinook and a fourth-round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. In a trade that brought Marián Hossa's employment to the Coyotes, along with prospect MacKenzie Entwistle, Jordan Maletta, and Andrew Campbell, the third-round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Krüger was traded by the Coyotes back to the Blackhawks along with prospect MacKenzie Entwistle, Jordan Oesterle, and Andrew Campbell.
Following the 2018–19 season, Krüger finished his nine-year career in the NHL, returning to Europe as a free agent in January 2019 after he signed ZSC Lions of the Netherlands as a two-year contract. Krüger's contract extension began on February 17, 2021, and will continue into the 2021-22 season.
