Life and career
Pérez was born in Baitoa, Dominican Republic, and now lives in Washington Heights, Manhattan.
Pérez is one of 11 children. By the time Pérez finished high school, he knew he wanted to be a comedian, so he relocated to New York City, where he majored in drama at Marymount Manhattan College, graduating in 1992.
He studied at Ensemble Studio Theatre and is a member of the LAByrinth Theatre Company in New York City.
Many critics lauded Pérez's role on the film Washington Heights (which he also co-wrote and produced).
"Mr. Perez has charisma to burn," the New York Times reported. For his role in Washington Heights, he received the 2002 Best Actor Award at The Milan International Film Festival in Italy.
He was named as one of the most influential Dominican actors in the country at the Santo Domingo Invita exhibit.
Pérez was honoured in the Dominican Film Festival in Puerto Plata in November 2007 alongside Dania Ramirez for his humanitarian efforts in the Dominican Republic. Pérez said that his first pair of shoes were given to him at the age of 5 by his father, but that he only wore them to go to Mass on Sundays. Pérez also stated that he was so hungry when he first arrived in the United States and that he didn't know why because he was poor and didn't eat well until his mother took him to the doctor, where they discovered he had wormworms growing into his body through his feet because he would never walk barefoot. Since Hurricane Noel pounded the Dominican Republic, Pérez gave 10,000 shoes to families who lost everything.
He was named by Luz Garca's Noche de Luz program as a "Summer's Hot Body" in 2012.
