Malik Monk Career

High school career

For his freshman year, Monk attended East Poinsett County High School in Lepanto, Arkansas. While leading them to a (25-8) overall record and a spot in the Class 2A state championship tournament as a freshman, he averaged 22.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. Monk transferred to Bentonville, Arkansas, after his freshman year. He averaged 26.6 points per game in his junior year. Monk played for the Arkansas Wings Elite in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball Circuit (EYBL) in spring and summer of 2015, where he averaged 19.7 points per game. He then competed on the 2015 Nike Global Challenge for the East team, where he averaged 22 points, 12 rebounds, and four assist in addition to winning Tournament MVP awards. Monk pledged to Kentucky on November 18, 2015, choosing UK over Arkansas. He averaged 28.6 points per game, 4.4 assist per game, and 7.6 rebounds per game as a senior. Monk earned Co-MVP awards alongside Kentucky teammate De'Aaron Fox in the 2016 McDonald's All-American Game and Jordan Brand Classic.

Monk's last high school game was March 11, 2016, scoring 19 points in a 59-49 loss in the 7A state championship to Cabot High School.

Monk was regarded as one of the top players in the 2016 class by the four major recruiting companies: Rivals, ESPN, Scout, and 247 Sports. In the 2016 high school class, Monk was ranked as the No. 9 overall player and No.1 shooting guard.

College career

In a victory over the University of North Carolina on December 17, 2016, Monk tied a University of Kentucky freshman scoring record of 47 points. In a 99-76 victory over Ole Miss, he scored 34 points on five-for-seven three-point shootings. In an 85-69 victory over South Carolina on January 21, 2017, Monk scored 27 points. He scored 37 points against the Georgia Bulldogs on January 31, 2017. In a 76-66 victory over Florida, Monk scored 33 points on February 25, 2017. In a 73–67 victory over Vanderbilt, Monk scored 27 points on February 28, 2017. Monk was named First-Team All-SEC and the SEC All-Freshman team at the end of his freshman season, as well as being named to both First-team All-SEC and the SEC All-Freshman team.

Monk revealed at the end of his freshman season that he would forego his final three years of service in order to enter the 2017 NBA draft, where he was deemed a first round pick.

Professional career

The Charlotte Hornets' 2011 NBA draft had Monk selected with his 11th overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft. Monk signed his rookie scale with the Hornets on July 2, 2017, valuing $16,726,047. Due to an ankle injury, Monk would miss the entire 2017 NBA Summer League. In a 110-93 victory over the Denver Nuggets, Monk scored 17 points, two steals, and two assists. Monk scored 25 points in a 126-121 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on November 1, 2017, with Kentucky coach John Calipari on hand.

Monk was sent by the Greensboro Swarm, the Hornets' NBA G League affiliate, for one game during his rookie season. In a December 26, 2017 game, he scored 25 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and had four assists. Monk was banned indefinitely on February 26, 2020, for breaching the NBA's substance use policy. Before being suspended, Monk was averaging 10.3 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. After it was found that he was in compliance with the anti-drug policy, he was reinstated on June 8. In a 129-121 overtime victory over the Heat on February 1, 2021, Monk scored a career-high 36 points.

Monk, the Los Angeles Lakers' trade exception salary contract, was signed on August 6, 2021. Monk defeated the Denver Nuggets by 146–141 on April 10, 2022, putting up a career-high 41 points.

Monk agreed to a two-year, $19 million deal with the Sacramento Kings on July 6, 2022.
