Malena Muyala (born 23 March 1971) is a Uruguayan singer-songwriter who specializes in tango and milonga music.
She has released several albums that have been certified gold and platinum, as well as tours around and outside Uruguay.
Early life
Muyala was born in San José de Mayo, Uruguay. She is a descendent of Lebanese descent. Her family, especially her grandmother, fueled her love of music and theater. She loved performing on the radio and television. She began playing guitar and singing lessons at age 11, and appeared in "Nuestro Pueblo" (Our Town) and "Vámonos" (Let's Go). This group is made up of an all-female Murga. In 1988, she returned to Montevideo to study medicine but she was also a member of the acting group Antimurga BCG, which was also directed by Jorge Esmoris. "Enter Loquitos," "Papitas y Boniatos al Horno," and "Sexo, Chocolate y BCG" were all musical performances by the actress.
Career
In 1991, Muyala's musical career began when she won the first prize at the First National Tango Contest of Uruguay, which attracted 350 participants from all around the world. She put together a band and toured the country earlier this year. In 1994, she was welcomed by singer-songwriter Estela Magnone in the group Seda for a performance of her disc Prismatic Vals at the Vain Ferreira Theater. In 1997, she worked on "Malena Tanto Amor" ("Malena, so much tango and so much love"), which she presented to the Uruguayan Ministry of Culture and Education. The initiative was chosen to be displayed in six cities in the country's interior, as well as Montevideo in 1998. Muyala's first album, Temas Pendientes, was released in December 1998 by the record label Ayu. According to the Cámara Uruguaya del Disco, it reached fourth position in the best-selling albums in December, winning an Iris Prize. Muyala de la Luna (Music Cycle of the Sun and the Moon) concert collection in 1999, she performed with Malacara Producciones, who has worked with musician Jaime Roos. Disco de Oro (Gold Disc) was awarded to her Temas album. She appeared on Temas in Argentina in 2000 and again in 2000. Puro Verso (Pure Verse) was her second album by the singer and Buenos Aires, and she was released in that year.
In 2007, she debuted her third album Viajera (Voyager), which was then certified Gold. In December 2008, she was joined by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Montevideo for a performance entitled Malena Muyala + La Filarmonica at the Hotel del Prado's steps to commemorate the tenth anniversary of her first album. At the Solis Theatre, she performed her fourth CD live and her first DVD called Malena Muyala en el Solis; it was released in 2009.
She appeared on the Palacio Legislativo (Legislative Palace) steps for the new legislators' first day in Parliament in 2010. She was invited by Argentina's authorities to attend a bicentennial celebration. At the mayor's induction ceremony, she appeared with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Montevideo. She appeared at Mercedes, Las Piedras, and Montevideo in 2011, representing Uruguay's bicentennials for events involving Jose Artigas and the Oriental Revolution. She performed alongside other well-known artists in a song for the Fundación Celeste, a non-profit group set up by the Uruguayan national football team to promote sports.
In 2011, Muyala toured Montevideo villages and listened to local stories. Pebeta de mi Barrio, a book and album project, was chronicled by the author. The United Nations and UNESCO sponsored her tour, and Festival Cubadisco 2012 named her as a point of concern.
