Maisie Williams Career

Acting career

Williams began her professional career by co-starring in one of the largest ensemble casts on television at the age of 12. In HBO's epic fantasy drama series A Song of Ice and Fire, she was cast as Arya Stark, the feisty young tomboy daughter of a wealthy family. Williams nearly missed the audition (her second in her career) because it fell on a school trip to a farm; her mother encouraged her to attend the audition. Game of Thrones' global fame increased as the series's viewership increased.

Arya Stark's character is regarded as an anti heroine, a fan favorite that has developed into one of the main protagonists in the Game of Thrones fantasy story. Throughout the first six seasons, the protagonist's storyline encompasses severance, violence, and revenge. A young actor who could play a deadly assassin would be needed for the physical role. Williams, who is naturally right-handed but kept in character by appearing left handed in the film, performed the bulk of the series's stunts and battle scenes. She was advised a year before the filming of "The Long Night" to build her stamina for the episode. That episode, the longest combat scene in film and television history, was nominated for the 2020 BAFTA TV Awards in the "Must-see moment" category. Williams appeared in all eight broadcast seasons of Game of Thrones, the last episode of which aired in May 2019.

Williams has said that although she looks back on her time as Arya with admiration and admiration, she did not neglect this period of her personal life. Arya was not only younger than Williams, but the job required that she be made to look boyish with short hair and make up, as well as a strap across her chest that made Williams feel ashamed during her teen years as her feminine body developed. The actress did not conform to what she was becoming in reality nor did Arya appear to be attractive, though she did not like her own body for not matching that of her character's.

Williams received critical praise and praise for her role as Arya in the film. In 2012, she was nominated for the Outstanding Supporting Actress category for the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards, but she did not make the nomination shortlist. She was given both the Best Young Actor Award and the Best Supporting Actress Award for Best Supporting Actress – Television (at 15 years, the youngest actress to achieve this). In November 2013, she was nominated for the BBC Radio 1 Teen Award for Best British Actor. In August 2014, she was named as "Best Supporting Actress, Drama." In 2015, she received the Empire Hero Award and the Saturn Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Young Actor in a Television Series. In 2016, she was nominated for the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series by a Primetime Emmy Award. Williams was nominated for the Best Performance in a Show in the MTV Movie & TV Awards in 2018. In 2019, her appearance in the final season of the drama resulted in her receiving the Saturn Award for Best Actor in a Television Series, as well as awards for Best Actor and Best Fight in the MTV Movie & TV Awards and People's Choice Awards for The Female TV Star and The Drama TV Star. Williams received her second nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series this year, but Variety's Daniel D'Addario said Williams "enteres the competition as a child with no experience but quickly demonstrated herself as a natural performer." Millions watched her develop into her talents, culminating in her debut in her debut as a child. She would have been nominated for an Emmy, which would bring a fitting end to her "extraordinary journey" come to an end.

Loren Caleigh was played by Williams in the three-part BBC supernatural thriller series The Secret of Crickley Hall in 2012. Williams appeared on The Olympic Ticket Scalper, a Funny or Die skit, at The Olympic Ticket Scalper. She appeared in the independent film Heatstroke (2012) and the short film Up on the Roof (2013).

Williams was named in the lead role of Lydia in the British melodramatic coming of age mystery film drama The Falling, set in an all-girls school for which she was given the London Film Critics' Circle Award for Young Artist of the Year, Evening Standard British Film Award Rising Star and the European Shooting Stars Award at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival for her role in Carol Morley's film premiere in 2014. On October 11, 2014, the film premiered at the BFI London Film Festival on October 11, 2014, and it was officially released in the United Kingdom on April 24. Williams was described by Guy Lodge of Variety as "brilliantly articulated" and delivering a "brilliant, often spiky performance." She appeared in the Irish comedy-drama film Gold in 2014.

In January 2015, Williams (a victim of cyberbullying herself) appeared in Casey Jacobs, a one-hour BAFTA nominated Cyberbully, a Channel 4 docudrama television film. Filipa Jodelka, a journalist for The Guardian, characterized Williams' central, almost solo appearance as a "tour-de-force." In the recurring role of Ashildr, a Viking girl made immortal by the Doctor, a Williams guest appeared in four episodes of BBC science fiction series Doctor Who ("The Woman Who Lived"), "Face the Raven," and "Hell Bent." Patrick Mulkern of the Radio Times described Williams' appearance in "The Woman Who Lived" as "superb."

In the Netflix science fiction teen superhero thriller film iBoy, Williams appeared alongside Bill Milner as Lucy. "Tristram Fane Saunders of the Daily Telegraph said she brought "depth, humour, and honesty to the role." Williams appeared in Mary Shelley, a romantic period drama directed by Haifaa al-Mansour and written by Emma Jensen, also in 2017.

In Nick Park's animated prehistoric comedy sports film Early Man, she portrayed Goona, a Bronze Age fearless rebel tomboy football enthusiast, though Gwilym Mumford of The Guardian and Kate Stables of the British Film Institute noted that Williams' accent varied during the film. Williams appeared in the stage play I and You, written by Lauren Gunderson from October 18th to October 24th. The play premiered at the Hampstead Theatre in London. The play attracted good attention at the box office, and Williams' stage appearance was regarded as a critical success, with the show being broadcast free on Instagram from 30 November to 3 December 2018 and then again in March 2020. Williams also appeared in the eleven-minute short film Corvidae, a dark fairy tale that was shot in 2013 and released in 2018, of which Craig Holton of flickfeast said that Williams gave "an undeniably ethereal quality to this short film, assisting it in the change from grounded realism to eldritch bucolic fantasy."

Williams appeared in Then Came You, a coming of age romantic comedy-drama film in which she played a teenager with a terminal disease in 2019. Williams' "sprightly appearance delicately vulnerable," the Hollywood Reporter's Frank Scheck found. On October 12, 2018, the film premiered at the Woodstock Film Festival, and in 2019 it was released throughout the United States. In the U.S. animated web series Gen:Lock, which is set in a dystopian future and is distributed on the Rooster Teeth subscription service, Williams portrayed Cammie MacCloud, a mischievous Scottish hacker. The second season of nine episodes premiered on HBO Max on November 4, 2021, just three months after it was announced on Rooster Teeth.

Williams co-starred in the delayed Disney/Fox superhero horror film The New Mutants, which was originally scheduled for release in April 2018. Williams portrayed Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane, a Scottish mutant who can turn into a wolf, in the New York Times, but she has trouble reconciling this with her religious convictions -- "with endearing sincerity." Despite mixed to critical evaluations, The Hollywood Reporter praised her performance as well as adding "layers of panache and emotion" to her character. In August 2020, the film was released in "in theaters" that were partially open but with reduced capacity due to the global COVID-19 pandemic epidemic). (Unfortunately, many other major Disney films were postponed). Anya Taylor-Joy, Blu Hunt, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, and Henry Zaga appear in the film, which was written and directed by Josh Boone. The Los Angeles Times described Williams' sex romantic relationship with Hunt's Danielle Moonstar as honest and a central part of the film's "ethical journey," which also made the New Mutants both a rare LGBTQ inclusive superhero film and a first-party revival of a Disney release.

Williams, the lead in Two Weeks to Live, a six-part dark, deadpan comedy revenge story, was released in September 2020. Kim Noakes, who died following her father's murder, has been raised in complete anonymity, living off the grid in the wilderness by her overprotective doomsday prepping badass survivalist mother, Tina (played by Sian Clifford). Following a seemingly harmless prank played on Kim of a fake video that makes her believe that everyone in the world has just two weeks to live, a series of events has been set in motion. Kim, who was encouraged to believe the times were close, sets off to murder the man who murdered her father in front of her while she was a teenager. Williams, "excels in her fish-out-of-water role, flitting between hapless and determined, worldly, and childlike," the Guardian reports. Williams uses comedy muscles while still demonstrating her stunt fighting and stunt skills in two weeks To Live. The action sequence was described as both amusing and humourous by the NME. Gaby Hull's script and produced by Kudos for Sky UK premiered on September 2nd, 2020, and premiered in the United States on HBO Max on September 5th. Sean Knopp, Mawaan Rizwan, and Taheen Modak appeared in the six-part series.

Williams appeared in The Owners, a 1990s-set psychological thriller in which she played Mary, a young woman who reluctantly consents to participate in a botched robbery with her boyfriend and two other young low-level criminals (Ian Kenny, Jake Curran, and Andrew Ellis) of an old couple's house (Sylvester McCoy and Rita Tushingham). Although lauding McCoy and Tushingham more, the Hollywood Reporter continued to praise Williams for her innate ability to make her character sympathetic.' "It's undeniably cool to see the young, now forever iconic actress kick ass in a real world setting," Dread Central said. On September 4, RLJE Films at select theatres and digital on demand. Williams' young star Julius Berg's script was directed by French director Julius Berg and adapted from Belgian artist Hermann and writer Yves H. Williams' debut in the film "she's full of energy, a little burst of fire and creativity; she's grown up in the industry and knows it inside out."

Williams plays the role of the real life punk rock star Jordan in the six-episode limited series Pistol for FX, about the Sex Pistols. (Pamela Rooke) The film is based on guitarist Steve Jones' book Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol, and was executive produced and directed by Danny Boyle. Jordan, the archetypal subversive model, whose 'distinctive Vivienne Westwood-designed outfits' and 'outrageous make-up' made her the first celebrity face of punk, and she was credited with inventing punk fashion style. Williams is underutilized, but she has a "formidable screen presence" as the "untouchably cool" Jordan complete "with a vertical sheet of perm hair." In advising Williams that she would be portraying her, she would be portraying a believable female, "a woman set apart," she said. I decided I wanted to be me, a walking work of art... "I was completely and completely unshakeable." In the second episode's cold opener, Williams "sparkles" as she recreates Jordan's cycling across her seaside home town and then commuting by train wearing a completely transparent PVC cap, the riot and booing of the people around her, which simply presents the punk movement's effect on society: a scene that Both The Guardian and Vogue judged to be one of the best in the series. Williams' Pistol press tour continued to embrace punk-rock style, fearing for her own public image.

Williams was cast in Sinners vs. Saints, Anthony Delano's 'Over the Top' true story about an eccentric American who was accused of kidnapping and raping the subject of her sexual obsession, a Mormon missionary named Kirk Anderson in England in the 1970s, was announced in May 2022. Williams had been cast in the forthcoming Apple drama series The New Look this month. Catherine Dior (Legion of Honour recipient for her role in the French resistance) is the younger sister of fashion designer Christian Dior whose style was at the time surpassing Coco Chanel's.

Williams delivered what The Daily Telegraph described as a feminist address in New York at the unveiling of Always's 'Like a Girl' campaign in 2015. Williams, a member of Generation Z, was the subject of the address. In an Audi commercial that aired during Super Bowl LIV's broadcast of Super Bowl LIV, Williams sang "Let It Go" from the film Frozen on February 2nd. In July 2020, she appeared in the Apple MacBook's "Made in the United Kingdom" campaign ad recognizing UK-based creators alongside others such as screenwriter and actor Michaela Coel, film designer and actor Grayson Perry, animation company Aardman, printmaker Gabriella Marcella, rapper Dave, and singer Labrinth. She was also named as an ambassador for Cartier's new Pasha de Cartier watch in summer 2020.

In April 2021, H&M introduced Williams as its global sustainability ambassador. This follows H&M's announcement in December that its foundation would invest $100 million (£72 million) on green initiatives. The aim was to encourage the brands to transition to a circular fashion style, where customers recycle unwanted clothing, resulting in less garbage and lower environmental impact at H&M. However, some sustainability campaigners and fair fashion campaigners retaliated against Williams and H&M, accusing them both of greenwashing. For perceived poor treatment of employees and inability to meet the Living Wage goals they set themselves, the fast-fashion brand recycling campaign was chastised for not going far enough, for not using renewable materials from the start. The company vehemently denied itself. Williams was chastised for lending her celebrity name and profiting from the company's relationship.

Other career activities

Dom Santry and Bill Milner (both of whom she encountered while working on iBoy) formed Daisy Chain Productions in early 2016 to create and produce UK-originated short films, theatrical features, and high-end television drama with a focus on youth and talent in the United Kingdom. The short film Stealing Silver, which Williams executive produced and starred in alongside Ronald Pickup in 2017, was the company's first film in 2017.

Williams and Lowri Roberts, through their production company Rapt, joined Deaval Film as executive producers on a 15-minute British/Czech co-produced stop motion animation short Salvation Has No Name. Filming at Aardman Studios, written and directed by Joseph Wallace, began in 2020 and is expected to be broadcast at festivals in 2022. Salvation Has No Name, which will be seen at festivals in 2022, is a cinematic folktale that investigates the subject of xenophobia and faith in connection with the refugee crisis. The troupe of circus clowns leads to a bizarre interpretation of the refugee crisis.

On August 1, 2018, Santry, Williams co-developed and launched the beta version of a new iOS-compatible social media app called Daisie, which was released on August 1st. Daisie is a multi-media social networking platform that is intended to assist artists and designers from various creative fields to display their work, identify problems, collaborate, and provide an alternative route to develop their careers. The company is based in Shoreditch, London's East End. Daisie raised $2 million ($2.5 million) in seed funding in May 2019. The number of users increased by one hundred thousand users in May 2019 after the public launch, with 70 percent of the user base being female), the majority of which were in London, where the bulk of the company's marketing efforts took place. Daisie received a score of 4 out of 5 on AppAdvice, earning a score out of 5.

Users can look for innovative ideas and network with other people in the fields they are interested in. Users' profiles continue to expand by connecting with other creative individuals (via "chains") and working collaboratively on projects (not by gaining high follower counts, friends, or even the majority of other social media platforms). "The way your reputation rises is by the chains you make," Williams says. You have to work together if you want to make a chain with someone." Creative people can display their own work or their collaborations in the same or multiple art industries on Daisie. They can even get advice from respected experts in their field by a question and answer format with others who have more experience.

Williams and Santry said they created Daisie as a way for young people to overcome the obstacles that hinder budding artists from being recognized and known. Williams said, "we want to have a community of artists who are sharing their work, sharing their projects, and ultimately assisting people in their own careers rather than our own." Daisie does not allow company profiles because the emphasis is on individual creators. In 2019, Williams said that instead of designers "having to conform to someone else's idea of what their job entails, they should let their art speak for themselves."

"Don't aim to be popular, strive to be skilled" was Williams' topic in Manchester in 2019. Daisie came to a conclusion after the talk by introducing Daisie as a social media platform for artists to communicate with each other and as a way for artists to reclaim control.

Williams also serves as a creative strategist and advisor to Contact, a website that was co-founded by Williams' partner Reuben Selby, who was once a member of her Daisie team. Initially aimed at connecting agencies and fashion models (including support services such as licencing and insurance). Following successful fundraising ($1.9 million (£1.4 million) in seed funds, the aim is to extend into other creative fields such as photographers, stylists, videographers, and others. Contact is a viable alternative to working in the creative industries, which is primarily dominated by agencies. Individuals and businesses can access and book designers and creative services through the internet, avoiding the need for an agency.
