Macy Gray Life

Macy Gray (born Natalie Renée McIntyre on September 6, 1967) is an American R&B and soul singer-songwriter, guitarist, film producer, and actress.

She is known for her raspy voice and a singing style heavily influenced by Billie Holiday. Gray has recorded ten studio albums and five Grammy Award nominations, winning one.

She has appeared in a variety of films, including Training Day, Spider-Man, Scary Movie 3, Lackawanna Blues, Idlewild, For Colored Girls, and The Paperboy.

Gray is best known for her international hit single "I Try," which is taken from her multi-platinum debut album On How Life Is. Gray made a major artistic leap in 2016 by changing names to record an album with binaural sounds.

The singer's debut into the world of audiophile recordings, Stripped (Chesky Records, 2016), was a step forward.

Early life

Natalie McIntyre was born in Canton, Ohio, and the niece of Laura McIntyre, a math teacher, and Otis Jones. Her stepfather was a steelworker, and her sister is a biology instructor. Nate, the younger brother who owns a gym in West Philadelphia, was featured on Queer Eye's season five finale. At the age of seven, she began piano lessons. Macy Gray's mailbox was discovered by her in a childhood bicycle mishap; she used the name in stories and later decided to use it as her stage name. She was late developing and didn't learn to talk properly until just before her tenth birthday.

Gray attended school with Brian Warner (later known as musician Marilyn Manson), but they didn't know each other. She attended more than one high school, including a boarding school that required her to leave due to her behavior.

She studied scriptwriting at the University of Southern California and learned scriptwriting.

Personal life

Gray had been married to Tracy Hinds, a mortgage broker, for about two years, but they divorced before her ascension to fame. They have three children: Aanisah, Mel, and Happy.

In 2005, Macy Gray Music Academy was founded.

Gray was chastised for remarks made during her 2022 appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored, which were seen as transphobic by some. Gray was asked how she would describe a woman, to which she replied, "boobs and a vagina." She went on to say that she did not endorse the inclusion of transgender people in women's sports, saying, "Just because you change your roles doesn't make you a lady," she said, though she hinted that she would call someone what they want to hear." "I love everybody; I can honestly say I love everyone." She said that her words had been misinterpreted and that she had "nothing but love and admiration for the LGBT+ and transgender people" in the days leading up to the interview. Following further online mockery, she deleted her comment and posted: "All of you are on my website, threatening me and calling me names, just becuz [sic] You said something you don't agree with -- be whatever you want to be, and fk [sic] off."

Macy Gray Career

Musical career

She decided to write songs for a friend while attending University of Southern California. A demo session had been planned for the songs to be released by another artist, but the singer was unable to arrive, so Gray recorded them herself.

While working as a cashier in Beverly Hills, she met writer-producer Joe Solo. They produced a set of songs and recorded them in Solo's studio together. Gray had the opportunity to perform at jazz cafés in Los Angeles thanks to his demo tape. Although Gray did not find her unusual voice for singing, Atlantic Records signed her. She began recording her debut album on her first album, but was dropped from the label following A&R's departure. Tom Carolan, who had signed her to the label, was dropped from the label. Macy returned to Ohio, but Jeff Blue, a senior vice president of Los Angeles' Zomba Label Group, persuaded her to return to music and signed her to a new recording contract, recording new songs based on her life experiences, with a new look, and began selling her to record labels in 1997. She signed a newbie with Epic Records in 1998. She appeared on "Love Won't Wait," a song on the Black Eyed Peas' debut album Behind the Front.

Gray appeared on her debut album in 1999 with producer Darryl Swann. On How Life Is A worldwide smash, which was launched in 1999 in the summer of 1999. "Do Something" was the first single on the charts, but the album's second single, "I Try," made it a hit. "I Try" (which appeared in Love Jones and the Jennifer Aniston-starring romantic-comedy Picture Perfect in 1997) was one of the album's best singles of 1999, and quadruple platinum in the United Kingdom and quadruple platinum in the UK.

Gray received the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "I Try" in 2001, which was also nominated for "song of the year" and "record of the year" in honor. Slick Rick, Black Eyed Peas, and Fatboy Slim (on the Rush Hour 2 soundtrack), as well as acting for the first time in the thriller Training Day, joined her. After forgetting the lyrics to the American national anthem in August 2001, Gray was booed at the Pro Football Hall of Fame exhibition game.

The Id was published on Gray's The Id, which was co-written with longtime collaborator Joe Solo. On the Billboard 200, the album debuted at number eleven. It did even better in the United Kingdom, where it ranked first on the UK Albums Chart and was awarded gold by the BPI.

She appeared in Spider-Man and contributed a remix of her song "My Nutmeg Phantasy" to its accompanying soundtrack in 2002. Gray appeared on Santana's album "Amoré (Sexo)" for his album Shaman.

She appeared on the Red Hot Organization's compilation CD in honor of Nigerian Afropop pioneer Fela Kuti, Red Hot and Riot, 2002. Femi Kuti's son appeared on a remix of Kuti's classic song "Water No Get Enemy" alongside renowned neo soul, hip hop, and R&B singer D'Angelo, Nile Rodgers, Roy Hargrove, and Kuti's son.

"Like the Sun (From Out of Nowhere)", Jeff Beck's guitar duet collection, was released in 2004 on Zucchero. In the soundtrack to 8 Mile, her song "Time of My Life" was included. A cartoon based on Gray's childhood was being produced, but it never came to fruition.

Gray's third studio album, The Trouble with Being Myself, received rave reviews in 2003. "When I See You," the lead single on radio in the United States and a top-forty hit in the United Kingdom, although the album was not as well received by fans. Nevertheless, it was Gray's third top ten albums in the United Kingdom. The Very Best of Macy Gray (2004) and Live in Las Vegas (2005) were both released shortly as a greatest hits collection and a live album. Gray was also featured on Marcus Miller's 2005 album Silver Rain, a recreation of Prince's 1986 song "Girls & Boys." "Cell Block Tango/He Had it Comin" was also a soundtrack to Queen Latifah and Lil' Kim's film Chicago.

Gray was kicked offstage at a concert in Barbados for profanity (which was part of the performance), but she was unaware that it was against the country's laws. She gave a public apology that night to prevent arrest.

Gray's fourth studio album (sixth overall) was released in March. Both singles, "Finally Made Me Happy" and "Shoo Be Doo," were released from the album. On the Shrek the Third soundtrack, "What I Gotta Do" is another track from the album. After a four-year absence since Gray's last studio album, it has been considered her comeback album. Some called the album critically acclaimed and others as her best work to date. It features collaborations with Natalie Cole, Fergie, Justin Timberlake, and Willi.am, the project's co-executive producer, as well as Gray's co-executive. It was moderately successful in the United States, where it debuted and peaked at number 39 on the Billboard 200, becoming Gray's highest-charging album since The Id. Big reached number 62 on the UK charts, her lowest-charting UK album, but the UK saw some success in other nations, including Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Finland, where it also ranked in the top 40 on their album charts.

In the final sequence of Gray's fifth studio album "Beauty in the World," the first single from his fifth studio album The Sellout, "Beauty in the World," is included. In several Microsoft videos made to advertise Internet Explorer 9, "Beauty in the World" was also used as the theme. Both singles from the album ("Beauty in the World" and "Litely") were top ten hits on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs Chart, with "Beauty in the World" and "Lately") being the top ten hits on the Top 10 hits.

The Sellout received mostly mixed feedback from most music critics on its first day. Metacritic gave it an average score of 57 out of five stars, according to Andy Gill of The Independent, who gave it three out of five stars, although AllMusic writer John Bush condemned Gray's songwriting.

However, The Boston Globe's James Reed praised the album's execution, while NME's Jeremy Allen gave the album a 7/10 rating.

Gray signed a deal with 429 Records in 2011 and began recording a sequence of covers for her forthcoming studio album Covered. On March 26, 2012, the album was officially released. "Here Comes the Rain Again" was the album's first single (originally performed by Eurythmics). Gray appeared as a visitor at the San Francisco Festival on February 16, 2012, collaborating with Gigi D'Alessio and Loredana Bertè.

Gray covered the entire record and launched her Talking Book in honor of the 1972 Stevie Wonder album Talking Book's 40th anniversary.

Gray discussed her heroin use in an interview with Oprah Winfrey's Where Are They Now, implying that she was unprepared for the level of fame she received. The interview took place on the same day as the introduction of her album The Way, which was released on Kobalt Records in October 2014. Following its unveiling, a world tour was announced shortly after.
