Lyn Hejinian Life

Lyn Hejinian (born May 17, 1941) is an American poet, essayist, translator, and publisher.

She is often associated with the Language poets and is best known for her book My Life (Sun & Moon, 1988, original Burning Deck, 1980), as well as her book The Language of Inquiry (University of California Press, 2000).

Life

Hejinian was born in San Francisco Bay and lives in Berkeley, California, with her partner, composer/musician Larry Ochs. Her book includes more than a dozen books of poetry and many books of essays, as well as two volumes of Russian poet Arkadi Dragomoshchenko's translations. She was editor of Tuumba Press from 1976 to 1984, and Poetics Journal co-edited from 1981 to 1999. (With Barrett Watten) Poetics Journal is a newspaper published in Tuumba, Ecuador. Atelos, a literary journal, has a co-editor who publishes cross-genre publications involving writers and other artists.

Hejinian has been involved in a number of collaborative projects with artists, singers, and filmmakers. At the University of California, Berkeley, she teaches poetics and contemporary literature. Hejinian has lectured in Russia and Europe. The California Arts Council, the Academy of American Poets, the Poetry Fund, the National Endowment of the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation have all given her grants and awards.

She sponsors the NBC Night DeCal course at UC Berkeley.
