Early life and family

He studied with his uncle Samuel Hall and graduated from Yale College in 1747, a family history. He was called to the pulpit of Stratfield Parish, now Bridgeport, Connecticut), in 1749. His pastorate was a turbulent one: an outspoken group of parishioners opposed to his ordination in 1751, and he was fired after charges against his moral deteriorated after his removal in 1751, according to one biography, "Were backed by evidence and also by his own confession." Although he studied medicine and taught school, he continued to preach for two more years, filling up void pulpits.

He married Abigail Burr of Fairfield, Connecticut, in 1752; she died the following year. He married Mary Osborne in 1757. He migrated to South Carolina and established himself as a physician in Dorchester, South Carolina, near Charleston, South Carolina, where a Congregationalist immigrant community from Dorchester, Massachusetts, decades before.
