AMANDA PLATELL: Bridgerton's mixed weight affair is great but I'll never date a fat guy

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 5, 2024
A fat-shaming furore erupted after Forbes magazine ran an article following the romance between Bridgerton's fulsome Nicola Coughlan and her pencil-thin suitor Luke Newton. Headlined 'Are we still not ready for a 'Mixed Weight Romance' on screen?', it was written by Virgie Tovar, one of America's leading experts on weight bias, who is a plus size herself. 'The one thing I know for 100 per cent certainty is that fat people have and always will be loved and lusted after,' she insisted. I'm sure she is right.

'People are uncomfortable with fat women having their love story': 'Fat activist' in a relationship with a smaller man hits back at critics of Bridgerton who think mixed-weight couples are 'unacceptable'

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 4, 2024
Megan Ixim, from New York, who is in a long-term relationship with her boyfriend, Todd, said the term is rooted in the idea that oversized women being in a relationship is an 'oddity' or 'unacceptable'. It comes after Forbes met fierce criticism over an opinion piece declaring that two Bridgerton characters (pictured inset) are in a 'mixed-weight romance' - suggesting that the world is 'still not ready' to see two people of different body types dating on-screen. How 'mixed-weight' relationships have been on our screens long before Bridgerton's Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton... but sexist norms meant nobody made a fuss when the woman was slimmer than her partner

Though Bridgerton may have opened up a new perspective to the conversation, so-called 'mixed-weight relationships' have featured on screens for many years. Far from Colin and Penelope (inset, played by Luke Newton and Nicola Coughlan) being the first 'mixed-weight' relationship to grace TV screens, FEMAIL explores all the famous couples where the man is of a bigger size.
