Lola Rae was born in Obalende, a suburb of Lagos, Nigeria, to a British father and a Ghanaian mother. She completed her primary and secondary school education at St. Saviour's School in Ikoyi and Lekki British International High School, Lagos. She moved to England at the age of 15 to finish her university studies at Central Saint Martins, where she concentrated on fashion textiles.

Career
Lola Rae's performing career began as a dancer when she first appeared on a dance company named "Mystikal" in 2010. Rae competed in the competition, and judge Simon Cowell selected Mystikal dancing group out of the semifinals of the competition. The company (Mystikal) had been signed to Syco for a year at the end of the season. Rae turned down an invitation to The X Factor in order to pursue a solo career as a musician.
Rae's debut hit single Watch My Ting Go and a follow-up single titled High were released on November 19th, 2012. At the 2013 Nigeria Entertainment Awards, she was selected as the "Most Promising Female Act to Watch" for the "Most Promising Female Act to Watch" category. Rae's "Watch My Ting Go" performed on Iyanya's album Fi Mi Le, which received her second award at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. In the music video for Ice Prince's "More," she appeared as the love interest of the Ice Prince in the song "More."
