Early life and career
Leslie "Les" Gold, a third-generation pawnbroker/salesman, was the grandson of a Jewish pawnbroker who once owned "Sam's Loans," a now-defunct pawnshop on Michigan Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. Gold made his first auction at age 7 at Sam's Loans. (The Sam's Loans building is being refurbished into a pawn shop-themed restaurant, dubbed "Gold Cash Gold.") He has been married to Lilli Gold since 1975, and they have two children, Ashley and Seth.
At age 12, Gold began selling pizzas and reselling them by the slice to Hebrew School students. Gold opened American Jewelry and Loan in 1978, near the Green Eight Shopping Center in Oak Park, on 8 Mile Road. He relocated it from 8 Mile in Detroit to its new location on Greenfield Road in 1993, a 50,000 square foot building that was originally a bowling alley. The company now has 5 locations, employees up to 200 people, and treats approximately 1,000 customers per day.
