Leroy Wright Career

College career

When he was in college, Wright played basketball at the College of the Pacific from 1957-1960 (freshmen were not allowed to play varsity sports, according to NCAA rules). Wright burst onto the national basketball scene as a sophomore in 1957–58 with per game averages of 13.2 points and 17.1 rebounds. In each of his junior and senior seasons (both 14.99 and 15.9, respectively), a 6 ft (9.06 m) forward, his points per game average increased (14.8 and 15.9, respectively), though his rebounding averages were among the best in the country. Wright's average of 25.1 rebounds per game as a freshman and 22.4 per game as a senior are the top two in Pacific history, and he became the first player to repeat as the NCAA Division I season rebounding champion. In his final two years as well, he was named West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Year, first releasing the award with San Francisco's Mike Farmer and then Saint Mary's LaRoy Doss.

Professional career

Wright was selected in the second round (16th overall) of the 1960 NBA draft, by the Boston Celtics after his college career ended. He never competed in the National Basketball Association, however. He spent two seasons as a member of the Pittsburgh Pipers, 1968-1969, when the team was moved to the Minnesota Pipers. Pittsburgh defeated the New Orleans Buccaneers in the ABA Finals, four games to three during his rookie season. It was the first ABA championship in the league's history. Wright played in 17 games over the season and averaged 3.4 points and 6.4 rebounds. During the playoffs, he appeared in another 13 games, averaging of 2.0 points and 5.6 rebounds en route to the championship.

Wright remained on the team until the following season, but averaged just 0.8 points and 3.0 rebounds but only played in ten games. Wright's career came to an end when he was not re-signed after the season, but it was 30 years old at that time.
