Leonid Hambro Life

Leonid Hambro (June 26, 1920 – October 23, 2006) was an American concert pianist and composer.

Life

Hambro was born in Chicago and the son of immigrant Lithuanian Jews; his father, a pianist, appeared in silent films.

He attended Juilliard School and received the First Prize at the National Naumburg Competition in 1946. Victor Borge's musical sidekick, 1961 to 1970, and he appeared with Borge occasionally during the remainder of Borge's career. He began as the Head of the Piano Department of the California Institute of the Arts in Santa Clarita, California, and Assistant Dean of the School of Music in 1980, and continued to teach these positions until 1992.

Hambro was Artist in Residence at the Aspen Institute and the official pianist of radio WQXR, New York. He appeared with the P. D. Bach Festival and the Hoffnung Musical Spoof Concerts. He appeared in The Complete Pianist by Jascha Zayde (Ludlow Music Inc., New York). He also created "Happy Birthday to You," a series of five variations on "Happy Birthday to You" in the style of several famous Beethoven works, including Minuet in G, Sonata Pathétique, Moonlight Sonata, For Elise, and the Fifth Symphony.

Hambro has released two albums on Cook Records, which are now operated by Smithsonian Folkways. They were titled A Perspective on Beethoven-Pianoforte and Cook's Tour of High Fidelity, and were published in 1953 and 1964, respectively. He also recorded "Switched-On Gershwin," a classical piano duo album arranged by Hambro and matched with Gershon Kingsley's Moog synthesizer, which was also available on AVCO Records in 1970. Victor Borge Hambro performed persiflages on well-known piano pieces such as Chopins Minute Waltz.

He entertained the members of the New York Atheists Inc. for their first annual Atheist Solstice Dinner and Party at the Hunan 5th Avenue Restaurant on December 22, 2003. He appeared to have been born an atheist and that he had never been to any church throughout his life. He died in New York City, at the age of 86.
