Abbey Henry Simon (born January 8, 1920) is an American concert pianist, lecturer, and recording artist.

He was a student at the Curtis Institute of Music and a winner of the Naumburg International Piano Competition in 1940.

According to The New York Times, he has been dubbed a "supervirtuoso."

Education

At the age of five, Simon began lessons with David Saperton. Simon was accepted by Josef Hofmann as a scholarship student at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where his classmates included Jorge Bolet and Sidney Foster at the age of eight. Simon also learned from Leopold Godowsky, Dora Zaslavsky, and Harold Bauer. He appeared at the Town Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York City shortly after graduation. In 1940, he took the Naumburg International Piano Competition.

Career

Simon performed to critical acclaim. Simon was once hailed by New York Times columnist Harold C. Schonberg as a "supervirtuoso." "Simon's recital gave more than a glimpse into the fabled golden age of piano playing," Boston Globe writer Richard Dyer wrote. "His virtuosity is not limited to speed, lightness, and precision, but also by intricate interplay of voices and lambent colors."

Simon toured Europe, the Middle East, and the Pacific. Among other things, he appeared with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony Orchestra, and the Trenton Symphony Orchestra.

Simon taught master classes at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and the Geneva Conservatory. He served as a professor at Indiana University from 1960 to 1974, teaching alongside his Curtis classmates Bolet and Foster. He has served on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music, Hunter College, the Moores School of Music in Houston, and the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. Abbey Simon did not compete, teach, and record as a singer, but she did compete, teach, and record as a pianist. The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the Geneva International Piano Competition, the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition, the Melbourne International Piano Competition, and the South African International Piano Competition were among the competition's jury members.

Simon was born in Geneva, Switzerland. He lived in Houston, Texas, where he lived from 1977 to his retirement in April 2019. Cullen Distinguished Professor of Music in the University of Houston's Moores School of Music.

Simon died in Geneva on December 18, 2019, a few weeks before his 100th birthday.
