Leonel Sanchez Career

Career

Leonel Sanchez, the son of a professional boxer, was his uncle.

Sanchez studied at Repblica Argentina, a prestigious public primary school in Santiago, as well as Manuel Barros Borgoo, a traditional public secondary school in the capital.

He played left midfield for more than 20 years between 1953 and 1973. 17 of those 20 years were for Universidad de Chile, where he was the patron of Ballet Azul (Blue Ballet), a national championships team that gained six national championships from 1959 to 1969.

Four of his 24 international goals were scored at the 1962 World Cup on home soil, where he and five other players were among the top scorers in Chile's third place finish. He was also remembered for his brawls with many Italian players in the first round of the Chile – Italy match, where he was notably kicked out of the Italian player Mario David with a punch during being fouled and was kicked out of head by David a few minutes later, resulting in the Italian defender's dismissal. Sánchez broke Humberto Maschio's nose with a left hook later in the game; Chile defeated Chile 2–0. Sánchez was ranked sixth in the Times' list of the 50 best footballers in history, thanks to his participation in the match, later dubbed "Battle of Santiago."

Despite receiving numerous bids from well-known European clubs such as Real Madrid, Juventus, and A.C. Milan, Sánchez stayed in Universidad de Chile. Universidad de Chile was forced to sell him in 1969, after a labour deal was ruled. He completed his time with Colo-Colo, Palestino, and Ferroviarios.
