Leilani Jones Career

Life and career

Jones was born in Oahu, Hawaii. Chiffon appeared in the original cast of Little Shop of Horrors at the WPA Theatre. When the show opened Off Broadway at the Orpheum Theater, Marlene Danielle was substituted for a few weeks. Jones regained her role at that time and spent three years as a director. Jones appeared on the original cast record as well. Jones stepped forward to play Satin, a stripper at a Chicago burlesque house, in the original Broadway revival of Grind. Jones received a Tony Award for her role as both a Best Featured Actress in a Musical and a Drama Desk Award.

Since leaving Grind, Jones, married writer, actor, and television producer Larry Wilmore and her career slowed significantly, as she appeared in a handful of movies and television shows and did voice over work for video games, most notably portraying the voice of the computer in Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? Jones re-imagined Chiffon at a Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS benefit in New York in 2005. Jones and her two children now reside in San Marino, California. During Wilmore's move to New York to become a host on Comedy Central, she and him split up.
