He attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) in Manhattan, where he worked at the Empire Diner from 1986 to 1989. "I wasn't a great waiter." I was am amusing, but I had a lot of attitude," he told Rosie magazine in March 2002. "The place is like a vortex for me," he said. At the diner, Tom Fontana, the future designer of Oz, met him.

At that time, he did some stage work. In a 1995 Los Angeles Times story, Tergesen said, "I was doing plays all the time, but there's no money in it." "I figured I'd be making it a living off it after graduation." He went to Los Angeles to assist Fontana in moving into his house. When dining at a restaurant on the day after arriving in Los Angeles, a casting director and friend of Fontana's asked Tergesen if he was an actor. "He told me there was a part in this film, but at the time, I couldn't imagine what it might be," Tergesen told the Los Angeles Times. Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze appeared in the film, which turned out to be a Point Breaker. "It was the beginning of me never having to do anything else than act," he told LT.com in 1990.
